Premium lists for the 1936 county fair are in the mail. The book contains awards, exhibitor instructions, entertainment, race program and other key details. Opening date is next Tuesday, September 8, with four days of programs. Entry day Tuesday emphasizes displays and livestock setup for public inspection.
The day sponsored playground closes for the season after a summer with an average daily attendance of 45. Key events included a treasure hunt all day picnic weiner roast croquet tournament and overnight hikes for boys. Three clubs sewing art taught by Mrs Murphy and a rifle club sponsored by Emory Nelson were organized.
The Cheyenne County Lumber Company reports their new Friday Telegraph ads are drawing praise from customers and friends. Manager G. B. Wookey says the campaign should boost business as strong reader interest grows.
C A Ross the Nebraska railway commission rate expert said a Chicago hearing on reduced grain freight rates from the pan handle to Omaha was postponed to next Wednesday. The hearing before Interstate Commerce Commission examiners will proceed with Ross representing Nebraska.
R. Wall, new manager of the Fort Sidney Sale Barn, announces a public sale for Monday September 7. A good selection of live stock will be offered as the first sale under the new management. He is anxious to present an outstanding list of stock.
The 50th Anniversary of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church near Sidney was observed with services. Lutherans from county parishes and many non Lutheran friends attended. Founded in 1886 the church has grown under 12 pastors. Rev E Suell served as first pastor in 1886 87. Original organizers included W Klusman J Finke Charles Hoffmeyer William Hoffmeyer Henry Laaker William Laaker William Nienhuser Schwanholz Fred Wittig sr. The first couple married and first child baptized are noted. Further details appear on page 6.
Students in Sidney glimpsed President Roosevelt as classes opened at 9 a m on a day delayed for some. Superintendent Liebendorfer said he would not impose penalties or dismiss early, noting he had already written his excuse from school.
Officials of Stickney's Auto Supply announce a Sidney branch to open shortly after September 1 in the Hahler building. Robert Van Gundy will manage, with other Sidney employees to be chosen. The store will offer wholesale and retail auto supplies, tire repair for retail trade, and machine shop facilities for wholesale buyers. The Sidney outlet will serve dealers in a territory bounded by Pine Bluffs, Broadwater, North Platte, and Peetz.
Low bids on three roads projects opened by the state highway department totaled 62,719 and were declared satisfactory by engineers. Bert Steele of Sidney submitted the low bid for 6.7 miles of grading between Harrisburg and Gering at 24,851. Abel Construction and Glen Smith of Lincoln bid 17,390 for culverts and 17,392 for bridges on the same project.
A Telegraph reporter observed a meeting of democratic leaders, agents, police, and secret service preparing advance security for President Roosevelt. The meticulous planning, including rail inspections on the Burlington route from South Dakota to Sidney, reflects fears of radical opposition to the New Deal and the president.
E F Witte Nebraska ERA administrator announced consolidation of agencies handling farm relief. Relief types include WPA work, rehabilitation loans, emergency feed loans, planting and harvesting loans, and subsistence grants. Applicants apply to the county relief director. central bureau certifies.
Kimball seeks a WPA project to curb and gutter 50 blocks if property owners approve. Engineer’s estimate is 24055 dollars with 15508 funded by federal sources and 8547 paid by property owners. Owners pay up to 40 cents per foot. 60 percent of block property owners must form a district to apply. Cement to be bid to the lowest bidder.
A Sunday night fire at Scott Welker's Morrill County farm, 12 miles southwest of Bridgeport, destroyed a barn, two granaries, two horses, 12 calves, hay, grain and harness in a $3,000 loss. Welker family woke to the blaze at about 11 15 p m after church service. Neighbors formed a bucket brigade to save nearby structures. only a small portion of the loss was insured.
John R. Quein, a well known Potter rancher, was taken to the veterans hospital at Cheyenne last week with asthma. He has suffered years with the ailment, but this was his most serious condition. Friends in Potter and Cheyenne county monitor his status and hope for a timely recovery.
President Roosevelt toured Cheyenne county on a 20 mile ride with Harry B. Coffee and C. S. Radcliffe, praising farmers foresight and courage. He said summer fallowing and soil moisture conservation could become standard for wheat, and showed interest in windbreaks and arid-region tree planting. He queried rainfall, well depth, and farm life details, noting drought contrasts with other areas.
Nebraska highway No 19 improvements near completion shorten the Denver to Black Hills trip by miles. The route will be oiling edges within a year, with paving and graving advancing between Angola, Northport, and the Colorado line. Governor Cochran expects designation as a U S route within a year.
Republican officials announced Kurt Grunwald cannot appear at the planned GOP rally tonight due to unavoidable circumstances. It was not learned if he will speak at a later date. Grunwald, a director of the Farmers Independence Council of America, was to discuss foreign imports and agricultural substitutes.
Richard L. Metcalfe of Omaha a Pioneer Democratic leader visited Sidney yesterday. He joked he must hurry back before his son Ted tears down the political fences he has built. Theodore Metcalfe, once lieutenant governor, is a strong Republican.
Nebraska farmers up to June 30 received 67,768,620 in AAA rental and other payments. Cheyenne County totaled 1,747,768.16, with only Custer and Scotts Bluff higher. Regional sums include Banner 539,450 Box Butte 860,663.87 Dawes 396,902.15 Deuel 769,477.73 Kimball 997,665.76 Morrill 907,107.54 Garden 603,794.23 Scotts Bluff 1,992,098.50 Sheridan 678,062.84 Sioux 138,577.20. Nebraska ranked fifth after Texas, Iowa, Kansas, Illinois. Payments included 46,748,600 corn 318,366,661 wheat and 2,653,358 sugar checks. June state total 5,076,867 largest for any month, with 4,088,642 corn hog, 984,854 wheat, 3,369 sugar payments.
Two district meetings of western Nebraska retailers proceed this week at Scottsbluff and Chadron under the Federation of Nebraska Retailers and the Nebraska Retail Hardware association. Sessions begin 2:30 p m and close with a barbecue at six. social activities fill the evening. B M Diers leads Scottsbluff, Henry Spalding Chadron, with W L Pierpont of Omaha to discuss taxes.
Dr C H Silvernail of Bridgeport, injured August 3 by a dragging horse, was described as somewhat improved by Omaha hospital staff last week. He underwent amputation of the left foot after a leg infection developed and his condition has drawn wide concern from western Nebraska residents.
The train bearing the body of Secretary of War Dern paused in Sidney yesterday morning en route to Salt Lake City where it is due to arrive today. Accompanying the Dern family were Attorney General Cummings Secretary of Commerce Roper Acting Secretary of War Woodring Admiral Standley Acting Secretary of the Navy Edward McGrady and General Malin Craig. Stops were scheduled at Ames Iowa and Omaha.
President Roosevelt addressed 5 000 attendees here yesterday and expressed regret that Gov Roy Cochran was ill after a tooth extraction and confined to bed, unable to attend. He noted greeting his old friend Congressman Coffee.
President Roosevelt's Nebraska trip draws heavy crowds of Democratic officials with Henry Wallace among the top figures. Wallace exits the train briefly to mingle, then joins the tour around the county, shaping a warm reception for the president in Sidney.
Tenth Avenue from King Street south to the Burlington tracks will be partially opened to traffic Wednesday as WPA workmen lay bituminous mat surfacing. The oil mat should be in place by then unless rain delays it. This marks the first link in a program to oil 52 blocks, with 14 blocks underway and 38 more expected to start this fall, all under WPA. Oiling will hard surface Tenth Avenue from History Street to the Burlington tracks.
Five people died in auto accidents in and near Kimball since May 20. Ernest Manfredo, a New York City chemist, died last week. On Decoration Day Herbert Wallin and his wife were killed in a head on crash with a bus. Ludwig Drecher of Chicago and Mrs J R George of Seattle also died in July injuries. Mrs Manfredo survived with serious injuries and partial paralysis from a spinal injury.
Thousands line streets to greet President Roosevelt on his first official western Nebraska visit since his election. A 30 minute delay stems from funeral train arrival of Secretary of War Dern. The president notes a sad mission and pays tribute to Dern, a Nebraska native, before addressing drought concerns. He is accompanied by his son John in the open car.
Huge crowds milled about Potter last week as the annual Potter days were staged successfully. Exhibits, sports programs and entertainment ran without delay, drawing praise from county residents. The Gurley friendly festival is set for Wednesday and Thursday this week with Sidney expected to send large delegations.
Sidney officials weigh a proposed baseball tournament as D R Campbell reports no definite decision yet. Gurley refuses to come, Potter wavers, and Campbell expects a firm answer within a day or two on whether Sidney will host its third annual meet.
A $20,000 automobile once owned by Al Capone will be shown at the Fox Theatre this week to promote the film Scarface starring Paul Muni. The car’s appearance is a promotional move to boost audience interest in the gangster drama based on Capone’s life episodes.
A man calling himself Jack Miller was arrested last Friday on a shoplifting charge. He is held in county jail awaiting arraignment. Officials say merchandise valued over $7 was taken from the local J C Penney store.
A. B. Wood recalls Cheyenne county’s first county fair was held at Gering in 1887, not Sidney, with Gering securing the state appropriation. He notes Mitchell did not host the fair originally, and Scotts Bluff county formation in 1889 placed the fair in a remote Cheyenne county area as the state law allowed.
