A pest campaign in Sidney features John D. MzBusk of Fairbury using a cyanide gas sprayer in vacant downtown buildings. In one shot, 71 dead rats were found with hundreds more likely dead in walls or floors, as merchants and the city prepare a coordinated anti rat drive.
Three Sidney churches held unusually large Sunday services. Rev. George Flora, recently back from West Africa, spoke at Trinity Lutheran. The Methodist church hosted a Special 4-H service honoring youth involved in 4-H activities. At Presbyterian, Andrew Speich of Denver performed a recital on the Orgaitron as the choir considers a new organ.
County agents from western Nebraska met in Bridgeport last Wednesday to map work for 1942 and coordinate county programs. Cheyenne county was represented by J. C. Swinbank. He announced plans to schedule agriculture meetings so state extension specialists can visit multiple counties on a single western Nebraska trip.
Patrol chief Capt. C. J. Sanders urged full driver cooperation to cut Nebraska traffic fatalities in 1941. He said the state safety patrol will do its part to reduce needless loss of life and that Nebraska has a good chance to beat last year's record.
An outline of the tentative program for the state P F L finish up meeting in Omaha on November 25 was received by Extension Agent Swinbank. The event closes the 1941 educational program on balanced livestock and feeding operations with sessions at the Livestock Exchange Building and a Chamber of Commerce banquet.
North Platte police Sheriff Schulz Deputy Taylor and Highway Patrolman Jensen acted on a tip about a planned bank robbery at Potter Staite. While bank hours were noon to 1 pm they observed two young men in a Wyoming car matching a stolen vehicle description from Cheyenne.
The Pieper brothers Leo and Gene bring their bands to Sidney for American Legion dances on successive Fridays. Leo debuts December 5 en route to Denver where his band opens at Rainbow Ballroom. Gene returns December 12 after west coast engagements.
The Kings Daughters plan their yearly Thanksgiving charity ball with Hank Barkers band providing music. Proceeds fund charitable work at Christmas and year round as advertisements roll out this week.
The forecast warns a mass of Canadian air will hit Nebraska tonight bringing much colder temperatures. Light rain and snow flurries may accompany the change as farmers brace for below freezing wind chill while ducks and wheat crops face the coming cold.
Dalton held off Potter 21 to 19 to claim the LPVAA six man football title in a tight game decided late. Early in the contest Dalton made a safety and Buo McMillan scooped a pass for a TD as Potter led 6-2 before Dalton surged to a 9-6 halftime edge and pulled ahead 21-12 in the third period. Potter scored late to close the gap but fell short, snapping its win streak since 1937.
J R Mason district manager for Great Western Sugar announced initial payments of 4.74 per ton to Nebraska Wheatland area beet growers, totaling 3 334 000 dollars, the highest since 1937. The sugar firm notes expect strong yields with Nebraska averaging 16.41 tons per acre, near the all time high, and outlines district payments by area.
Sidney aims to beat Scottsbluff in the next Friday home game after a 13 0 win over Kimball and a 13 13 tie last year. Coach Joe Burnham praises the Maroons while hinting at rehearsed plays and surprising tricks to upset the Bearcats in a rivalry still tight.
The Methodist ladies sponsor the annual Turkey dinner in the church basement on Thursday evening. A traditional pre Thanksgiving event drawing a large crowd, with dinner served from five o'clock. Plates cost 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children.
Dawes county officials announced a solved case in the murder of Robert House 21 of Douglas Wyoming whose semi nude body was found near Crawford October 16 Alvin DeWolf 21 is charged with the murder after signing a confession in Minneapolis and waiving extradition He was returned to Chadron authorities deputy Harris called the crime premeditated and said DeWolf lured House from a Wyoming ranch to rob him of his belongings including a saddle watch and about 50 dollars
Terry Carpenter told Lincoln on Saturday that if he runs for the U S senate his aim is to give Nebraskans a chance to express themselves on aiding the Allies. He questioned four Nebraska lawmakers who opposed a neutrality act revision, suggesting political motives and urging a statewide vote on foreign policy alignment.

The states Wyoming Colorado and Nebraska differ on Thanksgiving dates causing confusion this year. Wyoming and Colorado observe on November 2 while Nebraska waits until November 27. In 1942 the date will align to the last Thursday of November in all states.
Mrs. Mark Howard chairs the Red Cross sewing program and urges all sewing and knitting by local ladies be turned in by December 1. She hopes volunteers will push to complete as much work as possible before the month begins.

Five Cheyenne county men join the United States army this week through Selective Service and report Wednesday at the induction center Fort Warren Wyoming. The draftees are Henry John Loebe Jr Jakie Frederik Hull Charles Edward Peters Arthur Jerald Neel and Jurgen Kord William Bolz. The draft board announced there will be no call from Cheyenne county during December easing Christmas plans for those next in line.
The county chairman of the Young Citizens contest announced four top students Marjorie DeBrunner Lodgepole Josephine Radcliffe Sidney Eugene Ells Sidney and Merle Lockwood Sidney are entered in district ratings. District winners going to Omaha will be notified by the World Herald. Amelia Weber Dalton received honorable mention for a high psychological score.
Brigadier General Guy N Henninger states all federal employees drafted into the armed forces may receive civilian compensation for accumulated leave in addition to military pay. They may elect to keep leave credited until they return from active duty in lieu of compensation.
