Army clamps lid on Sioux Ordnance Depot coverage in local papers. Only items approved by Lieut. Carleton will be published as Capt. Sidney Stern directs Army publicity. Readers urged to avoid rumors and possible enemy influence.
President Roosevelt designated June 30 for the registration of young men ages 18 to 20 to complete the current manpower registration for wartime service. The order also calls register all men who reach 20 after December 31, 1941 and before June 30 next who have not yet registered. Those aged 18 and 19 who register between 7 am and 9 pm on June 30 will not be drafted until they are 20. Males aged 20 to 45 are already subject to military service.
Two more filings for county offices were reported Saturday by the county treasurer s office Ed Erickson commissioner third district filed for reelection on the republican ticket quieting rumors he might not run He I L Pindell republican filed for reelection as county clerk on the republican ticket Both face Democratic opposition Ford Weikhorst seeks third district commissioner and Charles D Green seeks county clerk
The Lyman Richey Sand and Gravel Co of Omaha will establish a large gravel project at Big Springs to supply for the Sioux ordnance project at Sidney. Gravel will be taken from the South Platte River with a railroad spur. Production expected at 100 cars daily. Big Springs groups address housing for 50 or 60 incoming workers. Cardinal Construction Co awarded the depot construction contract.
Henry Geu is elected to the state 4-H Council and places third in the Crops Judging Contest during Lincoln Club Week. He also earns a free trip to the National Club Congress in Chicago as regional winner in the wheat production cost accounting contest, sponsored by International Harvesters Company.
Box Butte Presbytery pastors and ruling elders meet Sunday after noon and evening May 31 at Light Memorial Presbyterian Sidney. Dr Westphal directs three lectures and discussions from 3 30 to 9 30 pm with Rev John C Weston presiding.
The first Nebraska 4-H club council consists of Keith White president Ruby Sparks vice president Robert Perlinger secretary Henry Gell treasurer and J Willis Bolles news reporter. The council will guide over 20 000 club members in planning 4-H events. Trip winners to the conservation camp include Kenneth Terwilliger Boiles and Lucille Knaus with Boiles winning the news writing contest among 16 county champions. Betty Jean Feters placed second.
The opening band concert of the Summer season will be held at the shell Friday night announced by Director Julius W Cochran. A highlight is the Emblem of Honor presentation to Mrs Tara Peters Lodge pole who has five sons in the armed forces. Arrangements were made by Mayor R E Roche and Paul L Martin selective service board chair. Cochran said a program for Friday night's concert will be available for Friday's paper.
The American Legion sponsors the annual Memorial Day services at Sidney Greenwood cemetery on Saturday May 30 at eleven am, with Judge James L Tewell delivering the main address. If weather prevents, the program moves to the city auditorium. stores may close from 10 am to noon. The service includes a flag parade, the Sidney high school band, readings of The Gettysburg Address, and a wreath laying at the Unknown Soldier’s grave.
In Dalton the Memorial Day service moves to Sunday May 31 at 2:00 PM at the school auditorium. The American Legion sponsors the event for the season. Rev. James P. Fullam will deliver the day’s address. Memorial plans in Potter call for a 10:00 AM Saturday program with a public speaker and short service.
In cooperation with the retail advisory committee of the United States treasury department the chamber of commerce told Benjamin H. Namm that all Sidney shops will cease business for fifteen minutes on July 1. From noon to 12:15 they will exclusively sell war savings bonds and stamps as part of a nationwide program involving every community.
A. F. Whitmire of Union Pacific, based in Sunol, will be stationed at Potter to replace C. C. Kaderli who was transferred to Kimball. Lowell Leypoldt of North Platte will serve as temporary Potter agent until about June 10 when Whitmire assumes duties, per The Potter Review.
A violent storm struck the west Dalton area Sunday night damaging buildings on the Gene Weed and Charles Dedic farms and tearing up telephone poles. A hail strip accompanied the storm causing additional damage.
Stanley L. Rabe of Sidney, son of Mr and Mrs Herbert Rabe 541 Linden St received a recent advancement in the Army to staff sergeant. He is attached to the Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron AAFTS and serves as assistant post sergeant-major.
Minneapolis regional social security officials led by Dr. John P. Johnson visited Sidney to assess health sanitation housing education nutrition and family security concerns tied to a defense project in Cheyenne county. Fifteen experts will oversee a summer recreation plan with federal funds backing the effort.
A labor temple at the Hink building will house business agents for at least eleven AFL locals. Leaders include Wayne Dykes Denver Local 13 Teamsters, H. H. Newton Carpenters 24 Scottsbluff, and others from Cheyenne Sidney and Kansas City. An operating engineers office also at the fairgrounds with Jim Shirley Denver Local 9. Newton reports about 150 carpenters assigned to Sioux Ordnance Depot contracts amid wage-scale disputes.
Dayton Young of the Office of Price Administration warned approximately 200 business leaders and officials in Scottsbluff that price ceilings curb postwar inflation by balancing purchasing power with scarce goods. He argued costs rose 13 percent after WWI and could reach 50 billion dollars this time if not controlled, urging cooperation from merchants manufacturers wholesalers and the public to avoid bankruptcy economic chaos and misery. The talk followed a Q&A with William Thompson on price regulation issues.
The Sidney United States Employment Service urges immediate job applications as demand for construction workers grows in Nebraska. Manager Francis R. Hiner notes that over 3,000 Nebraska workers joined war construction projects in May and expects demand to rise quickly. Workers for carpentry, plumbing, bricklaying, and general labor are sought, with farm roles also opening. Applications are via the local office at 1200 Jackson St., Kokjer building, Sidney.
A conference of Christian education will be held at Trinity Lutheran church in Sidney on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Rev. Erwin S. Spees, secretary of the United Lutheran Church in America, will speak and conduct the conference. Congregations expected to participate include Grace Lutheran church Chappell Immanuel Lutheran Lodgepole Grace church Gurley Trinity church Dalton and First Lutheran church Patterson served by Dr Kahse in connection with Trinity Lutheran church.
The chamber urged Sidney stores not closing for Memorial Day to suspend business from ten a.m. to noon as a respectful gesture. The American Legion will hold a cemetery program at eleven, to finish by noon. Several storekeepers said they would close all day Saturday and stay open until nine o clock Friday night.
The country club will hold its first party of the year Thursday night. A 49'er party is being planned by the committee to start about eight o'clock. Paid-up members and others with special invitation tickets will be admitted. Extensive remodeling and modernization work has been done on the clubhouse.
The Red Cross home nursing and first aid program has enabled graduates of the home nursing classes to receive their diplomas. Recipients may pick up certificates at the Red Cross rooms in the public library buildings, announced yesterday.
E. G. Meredith of Bushnell, a member of the Kimball county board of commissioners, was named president of the National Association of County Officials at the annual convention, which selected Omaha as its 1943 convention city.
The Army's fighter planes top speeds reach about 400 mph and cost around 100000 each. They escort bombers, offer long range and heavy firepower. U.S. war plants race to produce thousands, financed by War Savings Bonds and a pledge of at least ten percent of income. Citizens are urged to buy share each payday to support the air corps.
Funeral services for L. F. Demers 92 will be held this afternoon at 2 30 from Gehrig Funeral Home. Rev G A Schwaiauer will officiate with interment at Greenwood cemetery. Demers a native of Barry Canada came to the U S in 1875 and lived in Minneapolis Jefferson Emerson Lodge Pole Sunol and finally Sunol since 1912. He married twice and leaves seven children and twenty three grandchildren.
Mrs. Hannah Catherine Hughes age 62 of Huntsman near Sidney died in a Scottsbluff hospital after a year of declining health. Born in Wales July 19 1879 she is survived by L John Hughes husband one daughter Mrs H F Smith of Longview WA three stepsons J Merle Hughes Scottsbluff Forrest Hughes Kearney and Francis Hughes Bloomfield one step daughter Mrs Harrison Kincaid Hartington three sisters Mrs N Morris Milford Mrs H W Edwards Denver and Mrs Jane Jenkins Lake Crystal MN one grandson and 12 step grandchildren Funeral services were held at the Methodist church here Sunday and the body was taken to Carroll for interment.
J Willis Bolles, a 4-H club boy from McCook in Red Willow county, captured the Nebraska state news writing title during the News Writing Meet at the University of Nebraska. Betty Jean Peters of Sidney and Dorothy Mae Heibel of Columbus finished second and third respectively, with gold silver and bronze medals awarded.
Farmers in western Nebraska face delayed spring planting due to two weeks of cool wet weather. May 15 was the target for corn, with much left unplanted in the western third. Labor shortages add to planning difficulties while crop prospects remain strong for winter wheat and pastures. Roadside weather and hail or rust threats loom over the harvest outlook.
The county board will retain a public health nurse for the ordnance project duration. City and school district decisions follow the June city council meeting. Cooperation is expected to hire a nurse to serve within school district limits, spurred by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary to address population growth and disease prevention.
John Martinesky of Sidney was re elected president of the Nebraska Letter Carriers association at the York convention. Omaha selected as the 1943 headquarters. Herbert Hall of Broken Bow and Ivan Hall of Omaha were re elected vice president and secretary respectively. J Elon Freid of York named treasurer while Earl Yarnal of Kearney won a three year term on the executive board. A Ramspeck bill endorsing a $300 annual war bonus for civil service workers was approved in resolution.
Dr. G H Thompson left Sunday for San Francisco where he has been commissioned a first lieutenant in the United States army. He has been a member of the reserve corps for several years and is the first Sidney dentist called into service. The only other local professional called so far is Dr C A Bitner, an officer in the medical corps at Oklahoma City.
