Jess Tompkins captured the flag golf tournament at Sidney country club on Sunday, finishing an inch from the cup on the 18th green amid cold wind. Cc. W. Smith placed second. Guy V. Doran earned the birdie prize with three under-par rounds and Bob Carr won for shortest travel. Council Boys Truck At Special Meeting
The city bought a Chevrolet truck for the street department from Kokjer Motor Friday night and held a special meeting to review five bids. A Dodge truck was traded in. Three pool hall licenses were approved. A motion to advertise for bituminous mat paving on 53 blocks of residential streets with completed curb and gutter work was adopted. Rainfall Reported in Sidney and Potter Areas
More than one third of an inch of rain fell in Sidney across three brief storms since last Thursday with .14 inches added from Sunday night into Monday. Potter vicinity saw about a quarter inch with snow. Property Transfer Reported Yesterday In Sidney
The Asa Couch property at 15th avenue and Illinois street was bought by Robert Welsh who plans a Texaco service station on the corner now held by Whitney Oil. School Board Faces Fire Loss Settlement With Insurer
The school board met with an insurance adjuster to settle fire damage to the old Central school building. The property, sold to J. L. Hand for 5000 dollars under contract with delivery May 15, remained owned by the board at the time of the blaze. The district insured for 11000, but recovery is expected to be far less. Road Bids Open May For Second Million Dollar Letting
State Engineer A C Tilley announced bids will open May 20 for the second million dollar highway letting this year. Projects include bituminous surfacing, bridges, concrete pavement, grading and culverts totaling 1 100 000 with federal aid 505 000 and state funds 588 000. Special Beet Rate Sought By Rail Lines In Panhandle
Union Pacific asked the railroad commission on Saturday to approve a point rate on sugar beets shipped in carload lots from beet towns on its line to Bayard Minatare Mitchell and Scottsbluff via the Burlington. The proposed rate would cut 20 to 25 percent from the current combined Northport local and Burlington local rates, removing the Northport transfer charge. Power Firm Wins Safety First Award at Nebraska Electric Meet
The Western Public Service Company of Scottsbluff received a plaque for the best company safety record in 1936 at the Nebraska Electrical Association's 10th annual convention in Lincoln. Ed Carruth Native Of This City Dies in Kansas
Ed Carruth a Sidney native and former national vice commander of the American Legion died at the Veterans Hospital in Herington Kansas last week. He was 45 and moved to Herington in 1906 where he became a prominent attorney. His last Sidney visit was to address an American Legion meeting.
