In Panhandle news Dalton John Friede fought to halt a spreading grass fire that threatened a neighbor’s field. His tractor became mired in a soft spot, leaving him with the flames at all sides and minor facial burns from the ordeal. He describes an uncomfortable siege before rescue and return.
Old time residents are urged to register for places of honor in the Golden Spike Jubilee Day parade to be held next Saturday. Union Pacific railroad employees have set up a committee to arrange cars for pioneers. Assemble at the city auditorium 3 to 3 30 PM. parade at 4 30 PM. Elwood Singer and Ward Jones coordinate.
Nebraska public hydroelectric districts push an amendment to guarantee municipalities a vote before any purchase of private utility properties. The proposal, backed by Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation, would block acquisitions before October 1, 1939 without municipal consent, and require ongoing condemnation actions by municipalities to be in good faith.

Twenty seven Nebraska counties will have aerial photographs taken as the Agricultural Adjustment administration completes mapping of the state from the air. L R Robertson Nebraska state aerial engineer announced plans after returning from Chicago. Planes will cover 32 291 square miles including most of the Sandhills with counties lacking fixed boundaries. Mapping is set to begin by May 15 and continue four to five months with four planes in Nebraska.
Helen Goodwin daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Goodwin was crowned DeMolay Sweetheart of 1939 at the Sidney DeMolay chapter Sweetheart Ball last Friday night. She stood among seven nominees and received a bracelet after the junior senior banquet surrounded by a youthful colorful dance.
Mary Ann Borges, a District 19 fourth grade pupil, won the Cheyenne county 3rd and 4th grade spelling contest held at the junior high school. She defeated entries from across the county to take the title. Borges is the daughter of Mrs. Anna Borges.
Fox Theatre marks Employees Week with top employee selections of current films. Management duties are lightened as staff demonstrate readiness for future responsibilities while patrons are urged to choose from the highlighted features. Tonight features The Hardys Ride High with Mickey Rooney and Lewis Stone. midweek presents Calling Doctor Kildare starring Lionel Barrymore and Lew Ayres.
Forest service supervisor Lawrence Joris of Alliance reports rapid progress on the 1939 Shelterbelt Plantings in the Panhandle. Over 86 miles of new belts have been planted this spring, totaling 354 miles since inception with 34 miles more planned this year. Counties involved include Box Butte Sheridan Morrill and experimental plantings span Garden Cheyenne Banner and Scotts Bluff. Surviving rate averages about 75 percent prompting replanting of earlier plantings with low survival.
D J Roach Nebraska district manager for Great Western Sugar reports 55,436 acres of sugar beets contracted for Nebraska factories for 1939, beating 1938’s 53,379 acres. Additions seek about 4,782 more acres, with an estimated government allotment near 59,679 acres. Wheatland plant has 7,006 contracted acres versus 6,000 last year.
Liberal attendance is anticipated at the annual May bazaar and dance at the St Patrick academy auditorium this Wednesday May 3 Members of the Altar Society have completed all arrangements for the affair and are prepared to serve up to 600 dinners from five to eight oclock The bazaar will include an outstanding display of fancy work and home made candy During the evening the usual concessions will add to the enjoyment Dancing will start as soon as the floor can be cleared after all dinners have been served probably about nine oclock.
A volunteer peach tree blooms in the Fritz Brauer yard in Sidney, likely the first in the area. Sprung from a seed left during a picnic years ago, the tree stands as a beautiful sight attracting admiring looks from neighbors.
Scottsbluff topped the Alliance regional track meet with 65 points. Alliance finished second with 20 points while Sidney placed fifth with 12.33 points as Mason won the mile for Alliance and Ellison placed second for Hyannis with Sack also competing in multiple events.

Event began nine a m and ended three p m with lunch served in the main corridor. The Telegraph announces the Golden Spike Jubilee Edition will be mailed this week. If advertising and news copy arrive early, the issue may go out Wednesday night. otherwise it will mail during Thursday. The aim is to provide readers with the official program for next Saturday’s events.
Arrangements have been made for western Nebraska potato growers to have seed potatoes examined for possible bacterial ring rot a destructive disease recently found in some lots. About 14 bushels of samples can be taken to Agricultural Agent Swinbank for inspection by a State Federal inspection service representative. If ring rot is found or suspected, samples go to Nebraska Agricultural College for identification.
The mercury hit 81 degrees in Sidney Sunday marking the hottest day of the year. Similar warmth spread across the state with golfers and picnickers enjoying the sunshine as a cooling trend was forecast for Monday evening. Farmers hope for rain to aid crops amid the unseasonable warmth.
The state equor commission rejected Bert's Place beer license application despite a unanimous city council vote to issue for the coming year. Mayor Roche said the council was not advised by the commission of its refusal.
Sidney city street improvement project briefly stopped Friday by District Engineer G F Buchanan after inspecting forms he found faulty He halted work without mayor city engineer or contractor prior notice Mayor Roche protested then Buchanan returned to explain the matter and the halt was lifted Carl Christ the curb and gutter contractor said he was not notified of any shutdown
Golden Spike Jubilee Day window displays promise strong attention as stores decorate with historical relics and pictures. Merchants plan uniform decorating tonight for unveiling Wednesday morning to boost advertising and window prize competition. Harry Courtright of Potter will lend material from his Western Nebraska history collection kept in the Potter library for public exhibition. Sidney visitors are urged to inspect many window decorations a couple hours next Saturday morning before the program begins in the afternoon.
Nebraska reports 23 000 4 H club members in 1938 boosting national enrollment to a record 1 286 029. Dr Warburton notes about 7 500 000 youths have received 4 H training since 1914, with over 40 percent of rural youths joining by the age of 21. Cheyenne county records 262 participants as a notable gain.
