Sidney businessmen toured farms across Cheyenne county and reported a greatly improved production outlook for 1933. Subsoil moisture is ample, winter wheat and spring grains show strong progress, and hail-damaged fields are recovering.
Ten race horses owned by Charles B. Irwin of Cheyenne are held by Mexican officials and starved in stalls while Irwin raises funds for feed. Irwin had entered the fleet of horses in Mexican meets but gate receipts failed. he faces possible confiscation of his string as purses were not collected.
The Bedington High Line Telephone Company petitions Rail Commissioner Bollen for authority to discontinue its switchboard and serve subscribers via a line attached to the exchange. The mutual company is exempt from regulation but must obtain required petitions from current and recent subscribers before closing an exchange.
Cheyenne county students at the University of Nebraska received degrees at the 33nd annual commencement on Monday morning June 5. Lyle M. Burkett of Sidney earned a doctor of dental surgery, Jason S. Webster of Dalton a bachelor of science in agriculture with a vocational agricultural certificate, Bill Allington of Sunol a bachelor of science in agriculture, and Gerald F. Thomas of Sidney a doctor of medicine.
The American Legion boxing committee plans a fight card at the auditorium on Wednesday June 21 with Fay Clark and Rusty Evans as probable headliners. Clark may outweigh Evans while Evans seeks the bout. Negotiations aim to pair Joey Beebe Milwaukee with Eddie Barrett St Paul for a semi final. Bill Busacker Weldon Thomas may appear in a preliminary. Buddy Garrett Holyoke could join. Advertising and loudspeaker broadcasts are planned.
Dr. P. H. Bartholomew, state health director, noted eight Nebraskan centenarians died last year. The names listed include Mrs. Matty Berger of Grand Island Soldiers Home aged 100, born in Ohio. Mrs. Carmel Busco of Lowell aged 102, born in Mexico. William Johnson of Omaha aged 100, born in West Virginia. Jacob Whistler of Sidney aged 101, born in Ohio. Mrs. Mary Fenton of Lincoln aged 100, born in Ireland. Elijah Conklin of Lincoln aged 103, born in Ohio. Mrs. Emily Fontenelle of Winne-gah Indian aged 100, birthplace unknown. and Mary Wolfe of Winnebago Indian aged 100, born in Nebraska.
Rotary club members gave talks on current issues at the regular Friday night meeting. Earl A. Winter spoke on the Century of Progress, Marius Christensen reviewed financial history leading to the push for bank deposit guarantees, and J. O. Johnson covered the J. P. Morgan inquiry. Harold Hepner provided piano entertainment.
Special notices sent to golf clubs invite competition in the first panhandle amateur open tournament at Alliance on the new Ec-Naula 18 hole course from July 2 to 4. The event inaugurates a five tournament series sponsored by the Alliance Junior Chamber of Commerce.
Will Jaspers, a Kimball blacksmith, faced a preliminary hearing yesterday on a grand larceny charge linked to the alleged theft of tools from a neighboring shop. Jasper pleaded not guilty at arraignment and was held to a $500 bond pending the hearing.
Nebraska dry forces refuse to impede August 9 beer legalization as plans leak. Rev B F Wyland resigns as state president signaling leadership shift to anti-saloon league and WCTU. Move to block a referendum hinges on funds to collect signatures, with 25 000 needed at about ten cents each.
The Green Lantern remains undefeated after six straight wins beating the Maroons 6 to 4 and extending its lead. The Maroons stay second by defeating the Bottlers who edge past the Lions to third. De Molays and Post Office tie for fourth as De Molays win twice and P O split. Schedule shows De Molay vs Green Lantern Tuesday.
Nebraska stands with five other states not receiving emergency relief loans from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. Through May 22, 42 states and two territories had received a total of 229,998,532 dollars. Iowa received 2,151,430 dollars and South Dakota 1,803,945 dollars. Nebraska residents led all states in total loans from the Regional Agricultural Credit Corporation up to March 31 with 14,885,920 dollars in 10,339 loans. South Dakota residents borrowed 8,844,464 dollars in 8,030 loans. Iowa got 4,996,039 dollars from 4,019 borrowers.
Miss Helen Harper daughter of Will Harper wed Leland R. Faith evangelist of the Assembly of God church in a December 31 Harrisburg ceremony kept secret until last week. Harper, who has lived with her grandparents since childhood, held the top scholastic average in her high school class. Faith is Newton Faith of Denver’s son and is a renowned boy evangelist then holding a Denver meeting.
Panhandle Gia reports employment on state emergency relief highway programs near 5741 workers. Roy Cochran lists projects across Nebraska with 1347 in the western half and 30 hours weekly at 30 cents. Counts cover Cozad-Lexington through Crawford-Belmont and other pairings, with funding mainly from federal emergency funds.
Sidney Seals shut out Chappell 11 to 0 as Wheat Belt standings stay tight. Potter and Peetz remain undefeated after weekend wins. Kilham and Hornby combined for a seven hit shutout, boosting Seals in the standings.
Sidney will host the annual district convention of Rebekahs in 1935 with dates set for May or June after a Bushnell meeting last Wednesday. Local attendees included Nellie Niemeller and many others, with Maud Roundtree of Falls City delivering the principal address.
Raymond Goding a 13 year old of Potter returned to Kimball hospital for the first of several operations after being badly injured last July when he fell under a large truck on Potter’s main street. Doctors say further surgeries are needed to address a fractured hip leg pelvis ruptured bladder and other internal injuries. He has remained steadfast and never flinched or feared as plans for two or three more operations are made. Continue on page 6.
De Molay will host its Nebraska state conclave in Alliance on June 19 20 and 21 with an expected crowd of 250 or more members and delegates from 32 chapters. George Moore Alliance state master councilor presides as housing for out of town delegates becomes the main issue as hosts seek spare bedrooms from local households.
State Treasurer Hall described April shipments funded by the old one cent per gallon law while May distributions reflected the new plan. May collections totaled 651,126 with 161,104 distributed after deductions to counties. Panhandle counties received scattered amounts totaling just over 12,000 across Scotts Bluff Banner Kimball Cheyenne Box Butte and Sioux among others.
Domestic wheat markets held steady for the week ending June 2 as corn weakened. May estimates show U S winter wheat prospects improving with a May 1 forecast raised by about 20 million bushels. Spring wheat progress is favorable with Canada seedings promising and soil moisture high. Harvesting has begun in Texas and the first car of the season arrived at Fort Worth June 1.
President Roosevelt approved five forest camps in Nebraska during a Washington visit. State forester Clayton Watkins said sites would be selected early this week and camps could be ready within ten days. The projects were proposed May 26 and include about 500 acres in Sarpy County near Louisville within the South Bend fisheries area.
John Walter Reinmuth a 71 year old prominent farmer of the Dalton district died Sunday after a 24 hour illness. He homesteaded in the area in 1900 and led the Rumely Implement company branch in Sidney for five years. He and wife Caroline celebrated their golden wedding anniversary April 22. Survived by wife and eight children Ralph William Floyd Dal ton Harry Clarence Broadwater Mrs N W Burr Gurley Mrs Julia Lindquist Bridgeport.
The non sectarian Bishop Beecher camp for boys near Crawford plans another outdoor camping period for ten days starting August 2. Boys of all creeds are invited to join the program run under the direction of Bishop George Allen Beecher of the Episcopal church assisted by Rev. James B. Roe and Rev. Francis R. Lee among others. A ten dollar fee covers camp provisions and instruction in swimming and camping ethics.
Plans underway for Cheyenne county Farmers Union picnic at Kreuger's Lake six miles east of Sidney on Wednesday June 21. Event to be free except afternoon ball game between two fast teams. Picnic program includes speaking sport and other activities. Public invited. not restricted to union members. Also notes city curb and gutter district for west Illinois street from 12th to 17th avenues with 18 inch curbing to prep for future oiling and paving.
Governor Bryan said Saturday he has begun walking for the first time since the election night last November 8. He used two canes to steady himself and noted gradual strength returning. He reached the door and described it as a privilege, hoping to leave for fresher air soon.
Halsey Fuller of Sidney has been notified that his academic and physical exams for Annapolis are satisfactory and he is instructed to appear June 15 for enlistment. His parents Mr. and Mrs. Clark Fuller and his brother and sister will accompany him east, stopping in Chicago.
Senator C. D. Green has received an advance copy of all laws passed at the last legislative session and has left it with Judge R. A. Barlow for inspection by any interested party. Additional copies will be released later, the senator noted.
The Krueger brothers announce the annual Fourth of July observance will be held at Krueger's Lake. Details will follow once the program is completed. They aim to stage an event larger than those of previous years.
Miss Carolyn Kennedy daughter of Mrs Daisy Kennedy attended Sidney De Molay ball at the city auditorium where she received a corsage and a De Molay pin in the sweetheart presentation. Maxine Goodwin and Gretchen Barlow were contenders. Kennedy won after an elimination election held Monday with results kept until Friday.
Bernard Feikert, 12, of Potter, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Feikert, was dismissed from Scottsbluff Methodist Hospital last week after a mastoid operation. Over 12 years he has suffered multiple injuries, including broken arms and collar bones, a fractured skull and throat injury, and fell on a hammer. He is reported to be recovering from his latest hospital stay.
The Farmers Union picnic of An telope, Herdon and Sextown locals will be held at Johnsons grove east of Potter next Friday, starting at 11 a.m. Members, families and friends are invited to attend. Dinner will be set at noon. Afternoon events include races for all ages, a ball game, tugs of war, free ice cream, plus free boating and swimming.
