The Cheyenne county AAA committee urges farmers with wheat in AAA warehouse loans to check maturity dates. Unredeemed 1540 wheat will be taken by the Commodity Credit Corporation when loans mature in the next four months.
The Cheyenne county AAA office urges spring wheat growers to consider crop insurance under the program. Some growers may not have applied before August 31, 1940 due to winter wheat feeding. The deadline to file is February 28, 1941, and the committee offers to explain the program in detail to interested growers planning to insure their spring wheat seeding.
M. R. Bly, a transient, was sentenced to thirty days in jail by County Judge Robert A. Barlow Monday morning on a larceny charge. Bly allegedly took a leather jacket from Montgomery Ward, was arrested at Grant Nebraska, and returned to Sidney by Deputy Sheriff Barton Taylor. One of four jackets taken was recovered. fingerprint records indicate a long criminal history.
Sterling L. E. Smith of Sterling Airways announces Sterling, Colo has been named an official flight training center for non college students. Men and women ages 19 to 26 can learn to fly free under this program. A new class is forming and applications are being solicited. The course includes 72 hours of ground school.
Debut opinion in Scottsbluff holds that public power districts cannot purchase any part of the Western Public Service Company within city or village boundaries if the area has received power from a government plant in the prior year LB170 limits public acquisition of electric systems.
A. E. Wright of the Sidney Board of Education attended a Grand Island meeting with state school officials to sort finances tied to licenses penalties and fines. They discussed whether monies from drivers licenses and hunting fishing licenses should fund other departments or remain with schools, seeking legislative action to fix the funds.
An agricultural college survey shows bindweed infestation affects over 415000 acres in Nebraska, with about 96 percent in the western half. About 1511980 acres have been organized for weed control districts, as farmers enter year four of efforts led by the state agriculture department and the college. Cheyenne county reports very light infestation, leading to a Dodgepole area control district.
The late Col. Robert S. Oberfelder’s probate filing in Cheyenne County outlines a possible half million dollar trust funded from income, with the Colorado National Bank as trustee. Eight children of Judge Joseph Oberfelder receive equal shares, while nieces, nephews, and a grandnephew receive divided property and specific bequests. Four scholarship trusts are established for Sidney High School and other charities receive income from trust funds.
David E. Eckert, brother of Mrs. Rose Harper of Sidney, died in Boulder last week after living there since 1919. He would have turned 69 on Feb 23 this year. Born in St. Paul Indiana, he moved to western Nebraska in 1886 and spent early years in Sidney with Union Pacific work where he met Carrie J Baiob, his wife. They lived near Redington from 1901, later in Dalton five years, then moved to Boulder. Survived by wife Carrie Eckert and two sons Vardeman J. Eckert in Denver and Lloyd Eckert teaching in Windsor high school, plus brothers Sam Eckert of Dalton and Jake Eckert of Scottsbluff.
Representative Harry B. Coffee said the federal purchase of 20 million bushels of No 2 potatoes for livestock feeding could lift potato prices to production cost. Idaho and Colorado lawmakers urged Secretary Wickard to approve, SMA would pay 25 cents per 100 pounds and supply to stockmen for feed only.
Scottsbluff carries an 11 game win streak into a two team conference finale against Sidney. The Bearcats beat Sidney 33 19 earlier this month and defender strength with Mankin Farrar Waite Joyce and Baumeartel gives Scottsbluff the edge though Sidney on home floor could upset. Frahm quiet hand infection and Kratz brothers McCann Brown provide Sidney speed.
Sup t A D Nelson of the Archer experiment station near Cheyenne spoke at the Cheyenne County Farm Bureau annual meeting in Sidney. He outlined a practical dry land tillage and crop rotation system suited to thinner soil, high altitude and windier, drier Cheyenne County. Nelson stressed livestock production and dependable feed as essentials, noting fall rye and fall wheat grown for hay provide a substantial feed source at Archer. (Continued on Page 6, Col. 3).
District Finance Chairman Ray mond Fox of Lodgepole Valley District, Boy Scouts of America, announced local chairmen for the February 11 Finance Campaign. Additional prospect lists and workers are being sent daily, with packets distributed to communities. Communities welcome the Dawn to Dusk Campaign, limiting workers to five prospects each, and the White House reports the President will join the Thirty-first Anniversary Day broadcast February 8 from 5:30 to 5:45 M S T.
Sidney joins hundreds of U S communities Thursday night in a birthday ball honoring Franklin D Roosevelt on his 59th birth date. Net proceeds go to infantile paralysis fund and local child deformity treatment. No advance ticket sales. Hank Barker's band to play as Sidney-Scottsbluff basketball game ends about 9 30. Local arrangements completed for a large dance.
Sheriff W. W. Schulz reports two new bills before the Nebraska legislature aimed at protecting business interests. A three penny larceny threshold would trigger grand larceny charges for shoplifters, strengthening penalties and deterrence. A second bill would impose heavier penalties for petty theft, with broader implications for Nebraska’s larceny laws.
An evening class to study current farm problems was organized last week in the Maple Grove and Uniform Farmers Union districts. The group plans weekly discussions on farm business topics including legislation, taxes, and market regulations led by J. W. Nielsen of Sidney High School.
The Bretenitz Baking Company announces a revolutionary Golden Crust leaf bread rich in vitamin B1. Each pound contains about 450 international units, restoring white bread’s vitamin B1 content to that of whole wheat. The loaf is offered at no extra cost at Breternitz Baking Co. and participating grocers.
The chamber of commerce board authorized a protest to Secretary of Agriculture Claude Wickard over the planned curtailment of 1941 sugar beet acreages in the western territories. They warn the measure could cause drastic farming readjustments and harm the local sugar beet industry amid pump irrigation development.
J A Little director of transportation for the state railway commission and Halsey McGovern special agent of the federal department of agriculture discussed filing a motion for rehearing before the interstate commerce commission in the grain rate dispute. The federal commission ruled the rates to Omaha were unjust but not discriminatory and the state plans to seek equalization with Denver to raise grower prices by 2 to 3 cents per bushel.
Royal Hansen of Holdrege was elected president of the Nebraska Sheriff's and Peace Officers' Association as the convention closed. Other officers include Glen Fox of Broken Bow as first vice president A E Carter of York as secretary treasurer E C Ward of Lincoln as vice president for the first district A W Elsasser of Omaha second district H A Feterson of Neligh third district and Frank Steinecher of Geneva fourth district. Sheriff W W Schulz of Sidney, retiring president, presided at general sessions.
A United States Navy recruiting representative will be at the Sidney post office on Friday February 7 during the forenoon to interview those seeking navy information. He will collect enlistment applications for the regular term of service. Sidney has sent many youths to the navy and army in the past six months, with most advancing rapidly.
