Local retailers promote a January Sidney days event with special bargains Wednesday and Thursday to lure value seeking residents from Sidney and surrounding areas. Merchants advertise new seasonable stock at deep discounts as slow business prompts cash flow, with plans for follow up promotions and possible free entertainment in February.
Late Friday night a brilliant display of northern lights lit the sky with a red northern glow. Observers said the phenomenon looked like a large fire reflecting across the heavens and peaked just before midnight. Great Falls, Montana, residents also noted the spectacle.
Five candidates filed for county and district offices in Cheyenne County marking the start of the 1938 political picture. Incumbents Gertrude Nelson and Louis Wasem sought reelection as county superintendent and county treasurer, while Edith Oldershaw and Herbert Stevens joined the slate for those offices. D R Campbell filed for clerk of the district court with primary elections in August and a general election in November. City races will select a mayor, three council members, two school board members, and a city clerk treasurer and police judge in April.
Attorney General Richard Hunter guides Nebraska safety patrol captain R. F. Weller on a license rule requiring farm and local trucks to display load capacity rather than advertised capacity. Overloading will be arrestable after March 1. until then rotation cards give time to obtain proper plates.
Two Nebraska lawmakers Rep Binderup from Minden and Rep Luckey from Lincoln have formally announced re election bids. Rep Coffee of Chadron is expected to run again though he cautions it is too early to commit. Rep Stefan of Norfolk and Rep McLaughlin of Omaha say no decision yet while several weeks pass.
Leon Larson son of Joe Larson of Gurley notes his 412 pound Hereford calf Lucky placed third at a Denver livestock show. He credits the 4-H baby beef club for guidance and the long term benefits, while Josephine Kurz's black Angus Chub earned fifth and Lemoyne Johnson's Pepper seventh in the Aberdeen Angus class. Other club members Carl Kurz and Kenneth Olson fed calves that did not place. The Short Grass baby beef club, led by O A Olson and Harold Spiker, has 10 Cheyenne county boys enrolled since 1937 and reorganized for 1938, with new members welcome ages 10 to 20.
The American Legion and auxiliary stage the annual birthday ball at the city Auditorium on Saturday January 20 with Nick St Marie and his Filipinos providing music. Proceeds support the new national foundation to fight infantile paralysis and aid local sufferers, with funds flowing back to communities for emergencies and ongoing care.
About thirty directors from 22 western Nebraska towns met in Scottsbluff for the seventh district association to hear State Inspector H. C. Schoening outline requirements. Alliance will host future meetings with officers to be elected April 21. Schoening reported that eight of sixty unlicensed operators remain active and that three licenses were revoked in the last 90 days. ten firms are on probation. The group aims to enforce laws after warnings and improvements.
The volunteer fire department has appointed a committee to handle arrangements for the annual firemen's ball to be held at the city auditorium on Saturday February 12. Advertising has been ordered and nearly everyone buys a ticket for the dance. Barker's band has been hired to furnish the music.
At the regular chamber of commerce meeting officials discussed Lodge Pole valley irrigation as the year’s major project. Tests near Lodge Pole probe pumping from deep depths while a Sidney test site and a Los Angeles pump quote were reviewed along with possible testing equipment and outside drillers. Mayor Roche reported progress on continued FSA support and seed and feed loans for Cheyenne county farmers. 29 members and 2 visitors attended.
Sister Liberata a long time St Patrick's Academy faculty member died at Roche hospital after a week of illness. Funeral mass at St Patrick's Church with Father Dink officiating. pallbearers named. Body to Louisville Kentucky after ceremony with Sisters Emerentia and Camilla.
Ogallala Thursday session packed as central and southern Nebraska residents attended a pump irrigation meeting led by Jay W Hepperly with Keith county agent. Eighteen exhibitors demonstrated equipment and a question box attracted strong interest. Principal speakers were Ivan D Wood of the agricultural college and G H Warfel of the Union Pacific railroad division. Several Sicney men and Lodge Pole Valley farmers joined the gathering.
W F Wehmiller of Sidney has been named by the Nebraska supreme court as chairman of the district committee handling complaints against lawyers for misconduct. He is joined by Milton C Murphy of North Platte and Edward A Cook of Lexington. The panel is part of a new bar integration plan effective January 1 requiring Nebraska lawyers to join the Nebraska Bar Association.
Sidney Rotarians heard W. M. Pulver of McCook urge a personal hobby and a community museum to preserve Sidney’s history. Pulver spoke on his arrowhead collection sparked by his son’s find, noting hobbies enrich individuals and communities. Honor students Charlotte Johnson, Bill Gross, Gordon Daniel and Marina Mayer attended.
Ne braska High School Activities association reports 17 schools sought Class A tournaments with eight sites chosen for March 2 to 5. Applicants include Mullen North Platte and Rushville for Class B and Lodge Pole, Mullen, North Platte for Class C, with Sidney among Class A prospects alongside Ogallala and Scotts Bluff.
Sidney’s Maroons trailed early as Scottsbluff took a fast start and held a 36 to 31 win in a conference game. Dopp’s late baskets iced the result while Mitchell and Scottsbluff remained unbeaten in league play ahead of next Friday’s pivotal tilt.
Extension entomologist O S Bare outlines a nine district conference plan with county agents to map the 1938 grasshopper control campaign. Sessions from Tecumseh to Fremont discuss infestation data and control methods, aiming for early spring action and better organization nationwide.
A statewide meeting for all Nebraska truck operators will be held at the Lincoln hotel in Lincoln on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Sponsored by the Nebraska Commercial Truckers Association and the Nebraska state railway commission, the session will unveil new rates effective February 16. R. F. Weller, Chief of the state highway safety patrol, will give an address.
Sunol high school cagers set a new state high scoring mark by defeating Dalton 117 to 7 last Friday night. The Sunol lineup built a 16-0 run in the opening two minutes and led 48-0 before Dalton finally scored.
Continental Oil Company says its 1938 advertising appropriation will rise 17 percent from 1937, directing about 66 percent of spending to daily and weekly press across roughly 1250 newspapers. The campaign will spotlight Conoco Bronze Gasoline and Conoco Germ Processed Motor Oil and their tough film forming lubricant action.
