Kimball county inaugurates tight economy with wage cuts across offices. Salaries reduced for the county clerk and attorney while the superintendent of schools loses 3000 annually in pay and the sheriff faces no deputy hiring. Several clerical and office allowances are trimmed and telephones reduced.
Sidney teams prepare a heavy week with three squads the high school town team and St Patrick academy fielding seven games. The high school and academy each play two, while Red Devil hosts three including Potter high school tonight and a Friday tilt at Gurley. Maroons face Kimball tonight then Sterling Saturday in a demanding schedule.
A. M Webb of Bayard was named Morrill County sheriff after a two day county court hearing before Judge Harry M. Marquis. The ruling ends a legal contest filed by incumbent E. L. Davis over the November 4 election, following ballot counting and witness testimony. Davis sought a recount citing irregularities. Webb’s victory by eight votes was upheld though Davis may appeal to the district court. Attorneys noted ballot shifts in Bayard and other precincts during the recount.
Condra warns water, not soil, is Nebraska’s most vital resource and rainfall its main income. He urges preserving groundwater, building storage reservoirs, and canal realignments to reduce evaporation. Narrow river channels and better management could free land for farming while preventing pollution and waste.
Glen Eastburn of the Omaha chamber of commerce reported western Nebraska is entering 1931 with optimism after tours through Cheyenne county and North Platte. Bank presidents and business leaders in Sidney and surrounding counties praised strong crop yields, reduced debt, and robust farm credit while predicting a solid year ahead despite economic strain.
R P Kepler was elected the 1931 president of the Sidney Country Club at the annual meeting held Thursday night. Mark G Howard was named vice president and Earl Kratz was re elected secretary treasurer with Dr R E Roche Joe Simodynes and H E Bauman named directors. A financial report by Karl R Krats showed excellent club finances as activities remained at a normal peak with strong attendance and enthusiasm.
Over 200 farmers and machine dealers attended a full day demonstration at the John Deere Implement company warehouse in Sidney. Factory experts led a program of education on proper operation of power farming equipment, with tractors emphasized as labor savers using minimal fuel costs. L. T. Poole, manager of the local branch, addressed the audience.
Nebraska may move to five congressional districts instead of six this week. party interests could complicate the cut and several incumbents oppose major boundary changes. Rumors of possible gerrymandering surface as George R. Curry of Arapahoe, head of the privileges and elections panel, discusses a reapportionment plan with GOP leaders.
Sixty eight Nebraska auxiliary units will receive national citations for maintaining 1990 membership, with awards dispatched from multiple district centers. Gidney Post 17 plans to entertain 500 visitors for the district tour session on January 28, while American Legion auxiliary members also meet the same day, chaired by state officers including Mrs. Maude Cochran and Mrs. Irene Fleming. Commander Marcus Poteet will give the main Legion address with other state officers expected.
Sidney Lodge Pole and Mitchell Posts lead a district four pace as the spread of results from Lincoln shows district 13 in front and district seven second. Commander Marcus Poteet aims for 20 000 members for 1931 and early checks show 11 4 members paid up. Nebraska’s national quota is 18 388 with 62 percent of the state goal met and over seven percent of the state quota raised.
Nebraska shows a 12 percent rise in cattle on feed from a year ago, the only corn belt state with gains, while the belt overall remains 10 percent below last year. Strong feed crops and low prices help Nebraska feeders amid a wide U.S. slowdown, with Westerns down 4 percent in marketings.
The farm management class meeting in district No 2 will discuss corn production in Cheyenne county. Farmers are asked to bring seed corn samples to study selection and adaptation. The session aims to stress careful management to raise corn profitably in coming years.
The Maroons, with Adams back and a sharp passing game, held off Chappell in a tight conference clash. Newman sparked Chappell with a late push, but Adams and Walker sealed the victory as Wolf and Gregeman contributed strong efforts for Devel County.
