Rev Reeves and family depart Dalton after eight years as pastor of the Dalton Presbyterian church. He began as a student pastor in 1922 guiding growth, major upgrades included basement expansion and new heating, with continued activity across church units.
The chamber of commerce membership drive aims to raise about 1400 dollars with a new dues scale. Directors discussed equitable costs among firms while some firms already adjusted their dues. A. E. Wright and others debated auditing committees, progress on a potential Union Pacific shop, and broader participation by employees at monthly luncheons.
State railroad commissioners withhold comment on the interstate commerce commission ruling denying relief to western Nebraska grain growers until a full copy is received and scanned. They weigh two options, appeal to courts or file a new complaint to address the objections, as the decision taxes growers 6 to 8 cents per hundred. The proposed parity would erase advantages enjoyed by Kansas City, St. Joseph and Denver over Omaha under a 15 year old rate plan.
A graveside service was conducted at Sidney Greenwood cemetery for Mrs Const ance Corbett former city librarian cremated in Denver after a church service last month Rev George W Higgins led the ceremony attended by close family and friends The ashes were interred with those of her late husband Rev A A Corbett Corbett served as librarian for over 30 years and died at age 77
The annual district meeting of county assistance officers will be held at the WPA district headquar ters in Alliance Wednesday. Assistance directors and staff from 14 Panhandle counties are expected. The theme covers the physical makeup of county assistance offices and intake interviewing. The afternoon session at the old city hall will be open to the public. Several WPA district directors are expected to address the group and a state officer from Lincoln may attend.
Directors of the Scottsbluff Production Credit Association set Wednesday January 23 for the annual meeting of stockholders announced by H L Sams Gering farmer and president. Sams said directors and secretary treasurer Glen G Avery are arranging a program that should rank among the best in seven years of the agricultural credit cooperative.
Sidney high Maroons defeated Alliance Bulldogs 28 to 11 as they prepare for Kimball and Scottsbluff. Lloyd Frahm scored 16 in Alliance win while Sidney used quick footwork to counter height. McCullah led Bulldog scoring after recovering from influenza.
Mrs George Eschliman of northeastern Colorado pleaded guilty to a federal kidnapping charge in Denver. Judge J Foster Symes will not fix a sentence until a full investigation is complete. The case involves her three sons and two other youths who abducted Frank Busch from his sheep ranch on Oct 19 and left him tarred and feathered in a gully near Chappell. She had earlier pleaded innocent with her sons Harley and Lloyd. Clifford Stutzman and Der old Boo had pleaded guilty.
Cheyenne county youths LeRoy Price Lawrence Clinton of Sidney and Oliver Trobough of Potter join the U S army today for a year of training under selective service. They enlisted earlier and await induction. if exams fail, William Kubes Jr Leonard Henry Mackey and Robert Raymond Anderson are in line. First to go from Cheyenne county was Gordon Tosin. North Platte station to close after January induction. future inductions move to Cheyenne station. Continued on page 6 column 2.
Capt T Schrein reports 1940 saw 32 counties with no fatal accidents and 27 maintaining 1939 levels. Nationwide totals show 244 highway deaths, with Cheyenne and Scotts Bluff each recording seven fatalities and Dawson, Gage, and other counties varied increases and decreases after a deadly Christmas crash in Lexington.
The fourth district American Legion and Auxiliary convention met in Kimball on Sunday and Monday with state officials Walter Roberts of Wahoo and Marguerite Bosch of Omaha in attendance. District officers included Marie Ackerman as vice-president. Many Sidney legion and auxiliary members attended. The Telegraph will publish a complete report Friday.
Four Cheyenne county 4-H club members and baby bee feeding project youths took calves to Denver for the National Western Stock Show. Carl Thomas of Dalton transported the calves. Owners are Ralph Anderson Potter Roger Mac Gowan Dalton Leon Larson Gurley and Kenneth Olson Sidney. Agricultural Agent J C Swinbank accompanied them and will stay until after the 4-H calf auction later this week.
Frontier Refining company filed a prospectus with the Securities and Exchange Commission to issue 175000 first mortgage bonds at five percent, due in one to six and one half years. The firm, controlled by Denver capital, lists M H Rechineau as president and Albert R Kline as vice president with H E Armitage as secretary treasurer. Malcolm F Roberts of a Denver investment bank will join the board. Frontier operates four refineries at Cheyenne with a daily capacity of 1309 barrels, plus fifteen service and bulk stations, fourteen in Nebraska and one in Wyoming. Twenty percent of output goes to retail customers and the rest to bulk buyers.
Henry Koester joined the list of Telegraph want ad boosters after selling his livestock within a day of placing the ad. He noted that Telegraph want ads get results as customers arrived Friday morning and he canceled the ad the next day.
Eighty John Deere dealers from Wyoming western South Dakota and western Nebraska attend a two day school and sales meeting at the local John Deere distributing branch. H Mac Cashland in charge of heavy goods Omaha Fred Harris credit manager Omaha W Chapman and T L Eyre factory representatives East Moline attend. The meeting started Monday morning and continues through today.
The board of county commissioners meets today to organize for the year and elect a new chairman. No personnel changes, as A. A. Fenske was rejected in the first district. Bids for 1941 supplies and designation as official county newspaper for 1941 are among items to be considered along with designated supply bids for various offices.
S. H. Snyder reported securing substantial information on extending rural electrification lines into Cheyenne county. He aims to have REA officials speak to the chamber of commerce about benefits for Sidney, noting current copper shortages ended the Kimball Cheyenne Banner project, a defense related issue. Snyder has handed REA materials to Agricultural Agent J. C. Swinbank for farmer inspection.
Four prominent sugar beet growers and livestock men from irrigated western Nebraska told the Lincoln Lions club that farming in their region remains strong and cooperative with state consumers. Speakers included T. C. Halley, Scottsbluff. Fred Attebery, Mitchell. Kent Lane, Lyman. and Leo Schumacher, Minatare. Halley cited North Platte valley population growth and Scottsbluff's 42 percent gain, while Attebery noted Nebraska's 1939 farm income averaging 1,850 dollars compared with the national 1,081.

Strom 32 longtime manager of the J C Penney Co store here Rev Virgil Smith officiated The body was sent to Missouria Montana for burial Mrs Strom and son Jack have gone to Langdon North Dakota to be with her parents Mr and Mrs J E Crawford Friends said Mrs Strom had disposed of most of her home furnishings and will likely return in a few weeks to settle affairs
Carl L. Ziegler, longtime J. C. Penney executive, is transferred from Haxtun Colorado to Sidney as store manager succeeding the late H. S. Strom. He arrived Saturday and praised Sidney as extremely favorable. Ziegler joined the Penney organization in 1928 and will relocate his wife and two children once housing is found.
Federal crop insurance will guarantee Cheyenne county a yield of 580 600 bushels of wheat from 55 300 insured acres. James H Campbell, chairman of the agricultural conservation program, notes 1941 insured acreage up 60 percent from 1940 with 925 applications. Estimated total winter and spring wheat planted may reach about 190 009 acres. Campbell says the increase shows farmers value government risk minimization and support for the 1941 program amid market uncertainties. FCIC officials discussed the plan in Spokane, Washington.
Leonard Nelson of Potter seeks prospective enrollees for a civilian pilot training course sponsored by the Civil Aeronautics Authority. A similar program at Holdrege ends this week and the instructor will be available after January 15. The course covers 35 hours flight and 72 hours ground training with a three hour cross country flight. entrants must have two years of college and be 18 to 26. Enrollments must begin soon, and interested individuals are asked to write Nelson as local field space and hangar arrangements will be arranged.
Construction of the municipal swimming pool at the city park advances ahead of schedule thanks to favorable weather. WPA supervisor Dale Carlbom reports minor equipment issues but the project remains on track for a June dedication with the Chamber of Commerce and city of Sidney coordinating. Landscaping includes new drives, widened Lodgepole Creek bridge, and an overlook by the creek. The pool area will feature extended grass and trees creating one of the state’s most picturesque parks.
State house notices announce departmental personnel changes. Sheriff JL Mengel appoints Harold Hulfish as deputy, succeeding John Brosnihan. T C Middleswart moves from Bridgeport to Lincoln as district engineer, with R A House shifting to Bridgeport. Dr. C Frazier says John S Logan remains as department attorney for now.
Agricultural Extension workers at the College of Agriculture and counties plan another Pasture-Forage-Livestock program in 1941. It will likely run similarly to past years as the sixth annual educational farm program in Nebraska. Sponsors and timing resemble prior years, with formal plan announcements expected soon.
The Nebraska unicameral legislature named standing committee members. Lambert chairs Claims Deficiencies with Metzger Bowman Van Diest and E R Blome listed. Crosby chairs Enrollment Review with Sorrell George Bevins Blome Elmer Rakow Neligh. Public Works is chaired by Mischke with Ernest Adams Neubauer Carmod Lambert Blome Van Diest Metzger Sullivan among the members.
