Winter of 1939 draped western Nebraska in heavy rain and snow from Sunday into Monday. Sidney logged 1.21 inches before turning to snow, with drifts over twenty-eight inches. Roads blocked on Highway 30, Union Pacific bus stranded near Sidney, and officials predicted continued closures into Monday afternoon. Compulsory Weed District Proposed for Lodgepole Precinct
Landowners in Lodgepole Precinct vote to form a weed control district targeting bindweed and puncture vines. Sidney will join Nebraska cities this week in protest against repeal of the mechanical inspection features of the state motor vehicle testing law. Governor Cochran backed the repeal in his legislative message, provoking city protests after large investments in testing equipment. Mayor Roche will try to contact Cochran upon his return to Nebraska, voicing that the governor’s stance is mistaken. Two Farmers Injured As Auto Hits Bridge Near Sidney
Two South Divide farmers J H Laaker aged 27 and Clifford Neinheuser 25 were treated for fractures after their car struck a bridge near Proctor Colorado. Laaker had a fractured right leg and Neinheuser a fractured right wrist. The car was pierced by a timber from the railing and ended in a dry ditch. Neinhaeser sought help at a nearby farmhouse and Elmer Phelps of Sidney transported them to Sidney. Highway patrolman Herman Brown investigated and estimated the car damaged beyond repair.

Youths Held for Theft of Cigarettes in Big Springs
Harry Bailey 16 and Wilburn Miller 20 are jailed in Deuel county on grand larceny charges for allegedly stealing 98 cartons of cigarettes from a Big Springs pool hall last week. They were arrested in Ogallala while driving a car reported stolen in Denver. The owner claimed the car the day of arrest. Both pleaded guilty at Deuel county court arraignment.

Double funeral for Becker couple after kerosene blast
Mr and Mrs Julius Becker farmers near Gurley died Friday morning from burns in a kitchen explosion caused when kerosene was poured on hot coals. Sheriff Schulz quoted Becker about ignoring his wife's warning. The couple died within minutes of each other after urgent hospital care. three Becker children were left at home.
