Western Nebraska faced record cold as temperatures fell to eighteen below zero in Sidney with a sweeping wind and drifting snow. Subzero conditions disrupted highways, rail and air traffic. trains ran hours late and side roads were impassable. No fatalities reported though many suffered from the cold as the cold wave stretched across fourteen days.

Filing Station At Potter Is Held Up
An unmasked bandit robbed the Hoobler Sinclair Service Station at Potter late Friday night taking 76.71 in cash. Sheriff W. W. Schulz reported no trace of the bandit or his companion, who sat in a car, by Monday as investigation continued. The suspect, about 25 to 30, confronted Hoopler with a gun and demanded cash, then fled west on highway No. 30. An alarm was sent but officers believe they turned onto a side road. The hold-up occurred around 11:30 p.m., with no other recent stick ups in the area.

Keplers Attend Sugar Bowl Trip to Texas and New Orleans
Attorney R. P. Kepler and his son Kenneth of Torrington Wyoming returned from a southern trip that included New Orleans where they watched the Sugar Bowl football classic won by Fordham over Missouri 2 to 0. Refugee Stops Here On Way To Alliance
Mrs. Lucille Ough of Alliance passed through Sidney Monday en route to her home from Honolulu. Evacuated Christmas Day with hundreds of others to clear the islands of women children and wounded she has not heard from her sailor husband in the Pacific fleet since November. Here she visited Don Goodwin whose son was reported missing in action after December 7.

The office of price administration announced January 1942 tire and tube quotas by county for cars motorcycles and light trucks and for trucks and buses. County totals show state and county allocations with specific counts for passenger car tires tubes and truck or bus tires tubes. Funeral Held For Early County Resident Hannah Lyngholm
Funeral services for Mrs. Hannah Lyngholm aged 86, longtime Cheyenne County resident, were held Saturday at Trinity Lutheran church with Dr. W. T Kahse officiating. She died New Year’s morning after a brief illness, having homesteaded near Brownson since 1883. Survivors include three children, a brother, and four grandchildren. two other children preceded her in death. Interment followed at Sidney Greenwood Cemetery.

Navy Recruiter to Stay in Sidney Until 1 P.M.
Navy recruiter S. E. Wolf reports he will remain in Sidney today until about one in the afternoon for his regular Tuesday visit. He invites interested young men to confer with him about enlisting in the United States Navy, urging volunteers aged 17 to 50 to join the fleet and answer the call. The Sidney station is in the Post Office Building each Tuesday morning.

Cafes Change Hands Opened For Business
Two cafes opened under new management in Sidney over the weekend. The Green Lantern reopened Monday morning after remodeling and redecorating. Harry J. Amundson, formerly of Hartington, bought the cafe from Harlan Kinton and will operate it with Mrs. Amundson, with a formal opening planned. The Thompson Cafe was sold to Lloyd Reineka, who opened Saturday morning and invites patrons via his advertisement.

Local Man Narrowly Survives New Year Cold
Howard Miller of Sidney nearly died New Year’s Eve after his car slid into a snow drift on a west Huntsman county road. With 14 below zero temperatures and a biting wind, he left the vehicle to seek help, suffering severe frostbite on ears and exposing hands and face. He reached the Frame farm, was helped to Bever farm, and received medical care with no serious lasting injuries reported.

Graff Implement Co Building At Dalton Destroyed By Blaze
The Graff Implement Company building in Dalton was destroyed by a Friday afternoon fire. Ten autos, six tractors, a truck, tires and parts were lost as explosions and dense smoke covered the area. Zero weather hampered the fire department with hose breaks and a blocked hydrant delaying containment.

Brakeman Injured When Torpedo Box Explodes on Train
Boyd Skinner a 26 year old brakeman from Sterling sustained bruises after a box containing torpedoes and flares used for signaling exploded as he lifted it onto the Burlington Denver Alliance train approaching Northport near Bridgeport. He received first aid in Sidney then Sterling hospital. No other injuries or fatalities were reported though windows were shattered.

Death removes former Dalton resident Mrs. Harker Harvey
Funeral services were held at Dalton Presbyterian Church for Mrs. Harker Harvey who died in Kimball hospital after an emergency operation. Lillian Laverne Reinmuth, born October 24 1924 in Dalton, was 17 years 2 months 1 day old. She was the fourth daughter of Ralph and Mrs. Reinmuth and attended Dalton schools and high school. She married Harker Harvey of Sidney on January 27 1941 and they lived in Kimball where he worked.

C of C Membership Campaign Is Talked
The chamber of commerce appointed a membership committee Monday to conduct the 1942 drive. Members include C. C. Jones Harald Keith Fred Johnson Ray Babcock and Eldred Merrick. The group will begin within a day or two and finish in two to three weeks. An auditing committee of O. B. Wolfe A. J. Jorgenson and Dick Walther was named to audit 1941 finances and the membership books. Jack H. Lowe was retained secretary for another year.

Clean Slate To Cafe By Health Director
The city health department cleared The Waddell Cafe after exhaustive tests on water and food linked to a recent sickness outbreak. Water tests by Dr. B Carl Russum and food particle tests with Dr. F E Cohen found no bacteria or harmful substances. Health director Dr C B Cornwart led the inquiry after diners at the cafe fell ill. polluted water was ruled out and tests on stomach contents of a railroad engineer were inconclusive.

Mrs Gravill Learns Of Daughter's Safety From Hawaii
Mrs I E Gravill received a letter from her daughter Mrs Beulah Finlayson of Hilo Hawaii stating she and her husband are safe. The letter, postmarked Dec 17, notes no bombing occurred or was anticipated in their section, with blackouts strict and food rationing tight. This is the first word since the December 7 attack.

1500 Foot Level Reached At Oil Test
The oil drill on the Dorsch farm south of Gering has reached 1,500 feet. Otto Fuerst, president of Fuerst Oil Development, stated Saturday night that showings of gas have been encountered and optimism remains high for success. Jackson EF Cagle attorney for an investment syndicate headed by John Nuveen Co of Chicago announced Consumers Public Power district of Nebraska bought all Nebraska properties of Western Public Service for about six point eight million dollars. The district took over Western Public Service after dissolving the company and buying its common stock from Engineers Public Service Co of New York. Elections were called at Sidney and Scottsbluff to decide whether condemnation proceedings will permit those cities to acquire their own plants. Consumers elected new officers and dissolved Western Public Service, renaming staff hoped to keep current personnel.

Wade Martin, executive vice chairman of the state defense committee, said it appears likely county rationing boards appointed to sell tires will also handle automobile rationing. State Engineer Scott said the motor vehicle division is informing about 1,600 auto dealers that no new vehicles can be sold until after Jan 15. Sheriff Mengel wired counties to enforce the order. Martin said county boards will start distributing tires on Jan 5 under the rationing program, with blanks to be shipped from Washington for distribution then. Nebraska winter wheat seeding fell 13 percent from last year and 17 percent below 1930 39 average. Delays were limited to extreme southeast counties due to weather. Dec 1 condition at 93 percent suggests a 49 810 000 bushel crop versus 34 426 000 in 1941. US winter wheat acreage down 14 percent from last year. US rye down 10 percent with a 93 percent Dec 1 condition. Production outlook for 1942 nearly 631 million bushels.
