About three hundred couples attended the American Legion Dance at the city auditorium, while a Fox theatre New Years Eve party drew a capacity crowd. State safety patrol aided local officers to curb reckless driving. a few infractions occurred but none led to arrests. In the U S at large, 149 deaths occurred on New Year’s Eve and Day, led by 128 traffic fatalities across 35 states. other causes included gunfire, drowning, burnings, exposure, and several self-inflicted deaths.

New Car Dealer Licensing Law Gains Force Jan 1
A new licensing regime for motor vehicle dealers and salesmen begins January 1, created by the last legislature to regulate auto commerce. Field Man Named To Advise Farmers In Lodge Pole Valley
M. S. Clement of Great Western Sugar announces the appointment of R. W. Nuckols as fieldman for the Lodge Pole valley territory with headquarters at Kimball. Nuckols will cover beet growing from Pine Bluffs to Sidney and is son of agronomist S. B. Nuckols. He is a University of Nebraska graduate in agriculture and has worked in Mitchell with the sugar company. The territory was previously served part time from Gering.

Scouting in the Wye Braska area council aims for higher membership and broader community support in 1938 under Scout Executive A. W. Makela. In late 1937 new troops formed as Ben E. Quick leads the council through 11 western Nebraska counties and two Wyoming counties. The highlight was the national jamboree in Washington with 55 local scouts. At Lake Guernsey 127 scouts and leaders did three one week camps and about 250 total experienced at least one camp. Courts of honor saw 781 advances and 544 merit badges awarded.
