County farmers will shortly receive corn hog contracts and a one page worksheet to calculate base corn acre and yield plus base hog numbers. They will transfer filled figures to a signed sample contract at a designated county site under a field clerk's supervision, keeping the worksheet as a home record.
Reports claim dissension within the Nebraska American Legion as eight Omaha and Lincoln men allegedly seek to dominate the department. Commander Kratz says no basis for moving headquarters and believes the 229 posts remain aligned despite St Clair’s accusations and a revolt endorsement by Harold Fee.
December crop inventory reports a marked rise in value with total production at $126,246,000 versus $83,529,000 last year. Corn slightly above estimates at 234,698,000 bushels. oats fall to 32,373,000 bushels. wheat near last year’s totals. hay significantly lower. sugar beets up over last year.
Sidney students attending schools out of town were guests of the Rotary Club at its Friday meeting. L. T. Poole led the program and introduced W. M. Winders who spoke on his experiences in the Spanish American War.
Griswold of Gordon announces Republican bid for governor. The state party confirms his candidacy and positions against incumbent Bryan Gee.
Mr. and Mrs. W. Leroy Larson and family journeyed to Bert Rand to spend Christmas with Mr. Larson’s parents when Mr. Larson’s father died suddenly on Sunday December 24 separate from the trip.
Kimball County authorities probe a tangled marriage status after Ned Greeley’s sister in law impersonated his bride at the license bureau. The 15 year old bride lacked parental consent and Pearl Castor, father of the bride, filed charges. Impersonation charges were filed against the sister in law.
Mrs. Katherine Engel 73 died at her daughter’s home in Gurley Sunday. Funeral services were held Tuesday from Gurley Lutheran Church with Rev Herman Joens presiding. Interment followed at Sidney Greenwood Cemetery beside her husband Mr Engel who died in 1925. She was born in Germany and came to the United States later in life.
State Engineer Cochran announced awards for highway construction bids totaling 797 893. The Chappell Brule Lincoln highway 10.9 miles awarded to John R Condon for grading 14.2 cents per yard totaling 54 716 and Koehler Construction Company for culverts 22 153 and Diamond Construction Company for bridges 23 661. Other bids include Abel Construction for Syracuse Duribar grading 61 280 and Keim Construction for culverts 15 537. Additional projects include Wickham Bridge company for a Council Bluffs bridge 22 077 and Monarch Engineering for Barneston bridge 12 972. Continues on page six.
Lions club sponsored New Year hunt covers 256 square miles in western Cheyenne County. Hunters slaughtered 2500 rabbits and 5 coyotes, with hundreds more shot but not turned in. Rabbits were distributed to the poor. surplus remained.
The 1934 basketball campaign starts Friday after Christmas. Sidney Maroons host Mitchell at the auditorium while St Patrick's Academy travels to Scottsbluff to face the Bearcats. Both squads have trained daily over the holidays under Weldon Thomas and Bob Whitmore.
Miss Luella Martin 22 of Kimball was killed instantly when an auto accident near Kimball occurred Monday evening. Her escort Milton Warnock sustained facial and head cuts and internal injuries with a broken neck and multiple fractures. The two were returning from a nearby area about eight miles west of Kimball when the vehicle struck an object at speed.
About 100 members from lodges in this district attended the De Molay district conclave in Bridgeport Thursday for the general meeting and banquet. Aliance’s Chandler Cobb was elected master councilor with Burton Bracken of Chappell as senior councilor and Elmer Ladine of Sidney as junior councilor. Neal Atkins and LeRoy Schamp from Sidney were chosen for district chaplain and fifth preceptor respectively.
Prominent Cheyenne county rancher Nels Olson 62 died early Sunday after injuries from a wood cutting accident Thursday worsened into pneumonia at Sidney hospital. A native of Sweden, Olson helped develop a leading western Nebraska ranch.
An evening of free entertainment at the Sidney auditorium on Wednesday is sponsored by the chamber of commerce and city athletic club. Events include a Rotary Lions volleyball match, athletic club youth games, Safeway and Wenaco basketball contests, Buck Davis on parallel bars, a handball possibility, and a free dance with Arcadians providing live music. The program aims to attract residents from Sidney and surrounding territory and is the third in a series.
The Telegraph News reports deposit insurance on each account not exceeding 2500 dollars after compliance with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation requirements. The bank received certificate No 5475 effective January 1 1934. President Roosevelt was told that 97 percent of depositors in the nation would be insured and Cummings reported 13423 banks insured with 141 ineligible. After July coverage increases to 10000 dollars. continuation promised on page six.
A ceres wheat sample grown by Charles Welton of Sidney won first place in the Lincoln utility small grain show tied to the organized agriculture program. Cheyenne County entries also earned honors in 60 wheat and various grain categories with exhibitors from Ithaca Falls City and Beatrice among others. Other prize winners include Marquis Great-George Davenport Chadron, oats by John Reis chik Falls City, and barley entries from multiple Nebraska towns.
Farmers puzzled over hog slaughter tax details will get clarification January 11. An Internal Revenue representative will be posted at the courthouse to explain the tax status for farmers planning to butcher and to assist those who have slaughtered hogs in filing returns. The briefing will cover paper work for existing slaughter records and may address related issues.
George Hodge announces twenty three assistants for statistical studies of Nebraska re employment office registrations. Each will cover three to five counties and gather data from about 101 000 registrations to report to Washington. Ray Goding has returned home to Potter after months in Omaia and Kimball hospitals following a major operation. The Potter Review notes he is greatly benefited and able to resume schooling after a courageous fight to regain his health since the July 1, 1932, accident that left him confined for many months and required several operations.

E. R. Woolley, manager of the Western Public service company, has been transferred to Kingston Jamaica to become sales manager for the utilities unit serving the island. He departs Saturday and will spend two weeks in New York before sailing. Kenneth C. Lasseter succeeds him locally.

Thieves broke into the Bushnell postoffice last week and stole 300 dollars in money and stamps and 1400 money order blanks. They entered by breaking the front door lock and pried the safe dial. No trace has been found of the culprits or loot.
Harry P. Conklin of Scottsbluff, state commissioner of public lands and buildings, filed for the Democratic renomination at Lincoln after his filing fees were received by Scotts Bluff county treasurer.
Wein 30 of Maywood released by Bridgeport officers after a coroners jury found the death of Moorehouse 20 of Lingle Wyoming accidental. Moorehouse was killed when he lunged toward Wein’s gun during a dispute over stolen money from a truck. Wein and his wife were returning from Lingle with potatoes when Moorehouse jumped into the truck tail.
