The 1883 Tobin Opera House, a Sidney landmark and social hub, is being razed by a WPA team led by George Plein after city purchase from the Tobin family. Once a center for plays, boxing stars, dances, and community events, it stood idle for years and was deemed a fire hazard before demolition.

Verne Bowman Placed In Cast After Injury at Telegraph Building
Verne Bowman, injured in a fall at The Telegraph building Thursday afternoon, is in a cast for about six weeks. Dr. R. E. Roche reports a fractured lumbar vertebra with displacement but no paralysis and expects no permanent effects. He fell while placing asbestos on a water storage tank and toppled onto a steam meter.

Man Badly Injured In Accident Near Peetz
Charles Poole of Julesburg Colorado was seriously injured Friday night when his car overturned on a curve three miles north of Peetz. State Patrolman William Oltman said Poole lay in a ditch for about an hour and a half before passing motorists found him and took him to Sidney Hospital. The car, a 1939 Pontiac bought recently from Beckman Motor Company in Sidney, rolled end over end after leaving the barrow pit.

Herman Joseph Morfeld 82 died Friday after a four hour illness. A Cheyenne county resident since 1910, he homesteaded near Potter and retired to Sidney. Survived by six sons and daughters, 33 grandchildren, funeral at St Patrick’s with Rev Anton Link. burial in family plot. Gehrig Funeral Home in charge.

Fire in vacant lot threatens houses on Illinois Street
A Monday morning blaze started in weeds at a vacant lot in the west part of town and set off a fire alarm. Weeds at the rear of houses between 15th and 16th Avenues on Illinois Street caught fire and menaced nearby structures.

Fifteen year old Jack Sypherd of Hastings is held by Lancaster county authorities for burglaries of two farm homes and a Burlington flag station between Lincoln and Cushman Saturday afternoon. Sheriff Davis and Burlington special agent George Stein arrested Sypherd and Bill Stiles late Saturday night in a vacant Cushman switch house. Sypherd reportedly admitted robbing the O. Zetia farm on O Street and a farm near Cushman, with Joe L. Kunselman living at the Burlington flag station nearby. He was found with a loaded revolver.

Mrs. Susan Chambers 170 died Friday after a long illness. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church with Rev. Peter E. Spehr officiating. Interment was in Sidney Greenwood cemetery beside her husband. Survivors include three daughters and seven sons, plus two brothers.

Three Districts Proposed For City Street Improvement
Three tentative curb and gutter districts covering thirty five blocks in all three wards were approved by the city council. The panel plans permanent improvement actions at the next meeting December 16 unless petitions signed by at least 51 percent of property owners protest.
