Vandalism Reported At Episcopal Church and Rectory
Police probed damage at an Episcopal church and its vacant rectory since April. Several prayer books and items were damaged, two rectory windows were broken, with no items stolen. A new rector is appointed and due mid September.
Second Sale Today At New Auction Pavilion
The Sidney Livestock Commission Company holds its second weekly sale today starting at one o'clock. Finishing touches are being added to the pavilion equipment, and manager S. G. Severson says the firm will operate at capacity soon. Sales will be held every Tuesday, with invites extended to Sidney business men and others to observe the livestock auctions.

Droughty Summer Pressures Nebraska Wheat Planting Plans
July and August brought scant rainfall to Cheyenne county as the drought coldly shapes farming in western Nebraska. Despite scattered showers, only one general rain since July 1 leaves wheat planting uncertain while corn suffers and sorghums provide livestock feed. Irrigated crops thrive while dry land crops wither, and 1940 acreage allotments have been mailed with a September 15 deadline for all papers. Continued on page 6, column 2.

Navy Band concert plans outlined by chamber board
The chamber of commerce board meets in the city council room at 10 AM to finalize advance plans for the United States Navy Band concert on October 11. A committee will be named, ticket pricing set, and advertising discussed, with ticket sales to begin through Western Nebraska and northeastern Colorado schools after classes resume. Two school matinees, each holding about 1200 students, will be scheduled. one evening show is planned.

New Type Game Bird Distributed In West Nebraska
A shipment of chukar partridges, recently unfamiliar to the area, was released Friday by R. P. Kepler on the Fuller ranch west of town. Partridges are being reared in a game sanctuary and are reportedly hatching and thriving. Additional birds were released near Oshkosh and at Scoggan ranch near Scottsbluff, with 30 pairs distributed and all birds banded. State officials urge the public to report killed birds by removing bands and sending them to the commission. It is illegal to kill the birds.

Blame Crash On Lights In Gurley Dalton Runoff Accident
Lela Burr of Gurley suffered a dislocated neck in a Saturday night crash between Gurley and Dalton. Her companion Margaret Siekert of Chadron was slightly hurt. Both were treated at Taylor Hospital. Siekert was released, Burr remained in care with serious injuries described as improving. Doctors cited headlights from another car as the blinding factor that drove the vehicle off the road and overturned.

Ten Sidney Lions attended the charter night for the newly formed Big Springs club on Thursday. The meeting featured an excellent setting and a keynote from Dr. A L Miller of Kimball, past district governor, with Dr. C H Smith as toastmaster. Banquet attendance reached 126.

Louisiana Woman Fined for Reckless Driving
Mrs Opal Phillon of Shreveport Louisiana was fined $10 and costs by County Judge Robert A Barlow after pleading guilty to a reckless driving charge. State Patrolman E W Oltman who signed the complaint chased her from Sidney to Sunol before catching her. Oltman said her car had only one light.

Proposed Historical Marker At Project
Chamber of commerce appoints a special committee to confer with Floyd Cropper NYA director on erecting a roadside marker west of town. It would highlight Sidneys heritage at the frontier army post and other local facts to attract tourists and boost Sidney business. Cropper says NYA or CCC labor could build it using stone from the old school building.

Dalton High School Graduate Paul Morrow Dies at 28
Paul Edward Morrow, graduate of Dalton High School, died at La Mesa Texas on August 25. Born in Monroe Nebraska, he attended Wesleyan and Oklahoma State colleges and worked in geophysics with Mott Smith Corp. in Houston. He is survived by his parents J E and Mrs Morrow and two sisters Ruth McNew of Oklahoma City and Emma Pearson of Tyler. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Potter Methodist church. Rice Funeral Home in charge.

City To Open Bids September 5th For Curbing And Oiling
Sealed bids will be opened by the city council next Tuesday night September 5 for the construction of street paving curb and guttering in improvement district No 6 in the east part of town. The project is in cooperation with the Works Progress Administration with standard WPA provisions. The work includes 400 cubic yards rough grading 3172 linear feet concrete curb and gutter 6186 square yards water stabilized soil base two inch bituminous mat with Armor Coat 250 cubic yards stock pile. Construction must start soon after bid designation and be completed in 30 to 45 days pending weather. Bituminous matting may be laid by October 15 if possible.

No Inquest Planned Into Death Of Margaret Shannon
Morrill County Attorney B F Coulter said Friday no inquest will be held into the death of 21 year old Margaret Shannon found shot through the head on her parents farm near Bridgeport. The Shannon parents said she had been hunting coyotes and forgot her gun in a grove near the farmhouse. She went to retrieve it last night and it apparently discharged as she crawled through a fence.
