The new city well drilled by W C Sheets of Potter was abandoned after a 320 foot depth. A good water supply was found but casing parts dropped, preventing surface reach. Officials plan another hole, hoping for a gravel bed water source nearby and a quicker surface feed despite this setback.
A slow storm drenched Sidney and western Nebraska with nearly a half inch of moisture by Monday noon, halting field work. Farmers report muddy roads, runoff into side streets, and slowed sugar beet planting in North Platte and Lodgepole valleys while pastures improve for the season.
Brig. Gen. Guy N. Henninger warns that not carrying a registration card or showing it on request becomes a draft violation and may prove prima facie evidence of failure to register. Amendments require possession of the certificate at all times and clarify late registration rules for those turning 21 since the date.
Lorenzo high school stars Francis Roelle and Glenn Still totaled 1334 points at the McCook meet as Superintendent Lloyd McCann notes. Roelle set a Class B broad jump record at 20 feet 23 4 inches and placed second in the 100 yard dash and high hurdles. Still tied for third in the high jump and took a fourth in the javelin while winning a preliminary heat in the low hurdles. Class B was won by Max with 24 points.
Finishing touches are to be put on highway No. 19 between Sidney and the Colorado state line per a legal notice in Fridays Telegraph. The call seeks 4000 lineal feet of wire cable guard rail 192 lineal feet of steel band guard rail or 200 lineal feet of beam guard rail and 158 guard posts. Sealed bids will be opened at Lincoln May 22.
The western section of the state Sunday school convention meets in Sidney on May 4 and 5 with talks by religious leaders. Attendance of 250 to 300 is expected from counties west of North Platte. The four sections run May 4-5 in Sidney, May 6-7 in Hastings, May 8-9 in Columbus, and May 11-12 in Auburn. The Telegraph will publish the complete program Friday.
Fort Sidney heads will meet tonight as the Day celebration committee finalizes programs for a park centered event tied to the new municipal swimming pool dedication. General Chairman R. M. McCandless reported plans include one or two national speakers and various entertainment acts.
Ward Week continues at Montgomery Ward with hundreds of values across the store. Items advertised in the circular and past newspapers remain available at unmatched prices. A full page ad highlights home appliances including electric refrigerators gas ranges and electric washing machines with another ad listing sales from other departments through Saturday night.
Nebraska Knights of Columbus picked Hastings as the 1942 convention city and re elected officers at the Norfolk meeting. Officers include Dr J R Hughes state deputy Jim Petska treasurer W E Kane warden James L Kidrana secretary William Whalen advocate. Pat Heaton Sidney was elected national delegate with W J Puetz Schuyler as alternate. About 300 Knights attended.
Cheyenne county announces eighth grade commencement for Tuesday May 13 at 2 p m. County Superintendent Edith Oldershaw said final exams will be held Thursday May 8 to determine the graduating list.
Mrs. Floyd Miller of Gurley was elected county project club chairman and Mrs. A. C. Borcher named group chairman for the coming year at the Cheyenne county achievement program in Sidney. Three hundred extension club women heard W. W. Derrick discuss lard uses and viewed exhibits on nutrition home management and living at home.
Eldred Merrick, injured in a April 20 automobile-truck collision near Chappell, remains not fully conscious and aware of losing his left arm after a skull fracture. Doctors describe his condition as not so well, with head x-rays still impossible, as George Toline, 21, died in the crash.
Nellie May Shindle 59, wife of Alex Shindle of Brownson, died Friday after a two week illness. A Cheyenne county resident since 1917 and Brownson precinct since 1925, she will be laid to rest at Sidney Greenwood Cemetery after services at Gehrig Funeral Home today at two. Rev. Virgil Smith will officiate, pallbearers named as Bismark Range Frank Anthony Ed Cortney William Bundy Eli Henderson and William Sparks. Born April 10 1882 in Delaware county Iowa, she moved to Webraska with her parents as a child. Continued on Page 4 Col 2.
Gene Pieper and his distinctive band return to the city auditorium tonight under American Legion sponsorship. A large crowd is anticipated after extensive advertising. Dancers have clamored for Pieper since his October appearance, as he arrives from the West Coast where his band spent the winter in major ballrooms.
Mrs. E. A. Winter chairs the annual Poppy Day sale by the American Legion auxiliary set for May 10. Assisted by Mrs. A. D. Green Lee, auxiliary members will sell poppies on Sidney streets all day. Poppies are made by disabled veterans and the drive typically receives strong public support.
Cheyenne county farmers will hold their Rural Electrification Association meeting in the district court room in Sidney on Monday evening May 5 at 8 o'clock. REA project manager George Phillips from Pine Bluffs Wyoming will be present to answer questions. Precinct committees have been contacting neighbors and securing paid memberships to fund an engineering survey to determine feasibility. Members are urged to join now to equalize costs and enable the survey.
The Altar Society of St Patrick's Catholic church announces a spring bazaar dinner and dance at the academy auditorium this Thursday May 1. One day event features booths of fancy work and candy, a dinner from five to eight p m, and a dance at nine. The society plans to feed several hundred and expects strong turnout, continuing a Sidney tradition.
A collision April 28 on highway No. 30 between Chappell and the Wyoming line killed George Toline of Sidney and badly injured Eldred Merrick, a Sidney businessman. The heavy truck box tore into the sedan, crushing Toline while other occupants escaped with minor injuries. This was the first highway fatality on the route in the year, state patrol said.
Harriett Taylor daughter of Mrs J R Taylor was presented Friday night as the 1941 De Molay Sweetheart during the sweetheart dance at the junior senior banquet. She received a DeMolay sweetheart pin and a large basket of roses and is part of Sidney high school's graduating class.
William Jackson Tilghman 59 a prominent Crook Colorado farmer died Saturday morning in a Sidney hospital. Rev G A Schwabauer will officiate at the service Wednesday at two o clock at Gehrig Funeral Home. Interment will be in Bohemian cemetery south of Sunol. Survived by widow five sons one grandson one sister and two brothers plus a twin brother. Lloyd Tilghman served at Camp Robinson and returned for the funeral. He farmed on property spanning Nebraska and Colorado.
Mrs. Mark G. Howard chairs the Sidney Cheyenne county Red Cross work room in the library basement open each afternoon with Mrs. Howard on Monday and others overseeing Tuesday through Saturday. More volunteers are needed to handle a large on hand quota and a larger one expected soon. Organizations or individuals desiring to sew or knit are urged to contact one of the listed ladies.
Farmers in Cheyenne County are invited to a Townsend hall meeting in Potter Wednesday night on rural electrification. REA director George Phillips of Pine Bluffs will speak, with expectations of large turnout from western precincts. Interest centers on Sidney Draw North Lodgepole and west Gurley Dalton areas.
Sheriff W. W. Schulz shows gradual improvement after a period of confinement at home. He has not returned to the office, and the Telegraph News reports his illness requires extreme quiet. No date given for when he may resume duty.
Franz W. Harvey, 30, of Cheyenne Wyoming pled guilty to a robbery charge before District Judge J L Tewell and received a five year sentence in the Nebraska state penitentiary. He robbed the Lockwood Jewelry Store last March 21 and sought leniency citing an outstanding Iowa parole violation and a prior burglary sentence. Harvey claimed freedom in Iowa eight months ago after serving part of a ten year term and admitted the crime after questioning. He had been employed by the Union Pacific railroad and Fort Francis E Warren, with a March layoff prompting the crime to reach New Mexico for work. His record includes an Iowa creamery burglary and a fugitive arrest in Omaha. He has been married five years.
Students of the North Ward school present the operetta Adventures of Pinocchio in two performances this week. A 2:30 matinee and a 7:30 evening show will be held in the senior high school auditorium. The cast features most pupils from the northward school with Blanche Curtis Jeannetta Sloan Laura Fish and J W Cochran directing. Music by Curtis Le Sueur and Cochran. Dorothy Putnam lighting Harriett Martin sound Lee Hecker stage manager. No admission charge.
Norma Treinen daughter of Mr and Mrs Herman Treinen represented Cheyenne county in the state spelling contest at Omaha on Saturday after winning the county championship. Douglas Kielty an eighth grader at St Leonard s school in Madison won the state championship and 200 cash prize. Delores Peters 13 of district 96 in Wayne county placed second earning 100.
Benjamin F. Schwartz, Chancellor of Nebraska Wesleyan University, will be commencement speaker at Potter May 16. Potter events run May 9 through May 16 with a junior senior banquet, baccalaureate, class night, annual picnic, and the main commencement.
