Final meeting of committees in charge sets the stage for Sidney's second annual power farming machinery show on May 7 to 9 at the country club. Estimated attendance may top 10,000 with over 8,000 expected. exhibitors from several states, car reps, and officials will gather for planning and conventions.
The Sidney league baseball team won a Sunday afternoon practice game 11 to 4 over Center as preparation for the league opener next week. Sidney rallied in the sixth inning after Segelke held the Sidneys to a 3 to 2 margin through five. Moore and Hornby pitched well for Sidney while the local squad collected 13 singles off two visiting pitchers. Center lineup included J Wilson, Thomas, Willis, Swenson, Witters, Cook, Portz, B Wilson, Moore, Hornby, Sterling, LWitters, Regester.
The chairmans team captained by Guy V. Doran won the annual club golf tourney held Sunday. Conditions were ideal with a slight wind, greens and fairways in great shape and turnout higher than any similar Sidney event. Notable scores emerged as early season play began, with Sam Diadénel named the featured match of the day.
D W Ewing came back to the city Saturday after a week in Omaha attending the annual spring convention of the J C Penney company. He said the Omaha meeting was the largest in numbers for the district and noted a confident atmosphere among store managers with no sign of low mood during sales condition discussions.
The Sidney high school glee club presented The Lucky Jade at Fox theatre before a large Friday audience. Directed by Prof. Julius Cochran the two act operatic drama featured about 75 performers in a plot moving from a voodoo temple in Africa to Hampton Beeches. Leads were Josephine Jordan and Lawrence Portrey with a strong chorus and supporting cast. Eleanor Rose and Helen Jane Johnson earned vocal praise as the crowd cheered multiple numbers.
The 1930 Nebraska spelling champion was from Will, Mtéilteville eighth grade, who defeated Agnes Bowers, 13, of Sacred Heart Greel ey. Virginia Hogan, last year’s runner up, placed near the top. Dorothy Spencer of Cheyenne county fell on symmetry. Betty Haller of St. John’s Omaha won third. Prizes included $25 to Florence Bieuteuille and $10 to Vivian McKim. The state contest, held in Douglas county court house, was under World Herald auspices.
Mrs. Charles A. Cullen of Casper Wyoming died Sunday at one o'clock. She was a step-daughter of Mrs Rebecca Baker of this city and had visited Sidney many times. Married last spring in Sidney, she then lived in Casper with her husband, a prominent businessman. Her death followed a two week old birth and a serious heart condition. Mrs Baker and her brother Jack Baker traveled to Casper as relatives learned of the illness.
Melvin Sweet tops the Sidney rifle club regular shoot with 183 points on a new style target in the old John Deere building Thursday evening. Rog McGee of Lovenay places second with 173. Indoor match plans with Crook and Peets and a return bout with Kimball are discussed for upcoming Thursday.
Miss Frances Ruth Grubb daughter of O A Grubb Kimball and Roy C Peterson son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Peterson Dix were married here Saturday afternoon April 26 Judge G P Kratz performed the ceremony witnessed by the bride’s father and sister The couple will reside in Dix where Peterson is in business

The Sidney vocational agriculture team won first in Holstein judging and sixth in all breeds at the Lincoln state contest held Thursday, after earlier earning western Nebraska honors at Worth Platte. Team members Guilford Soites Clayton Jones and Raymond Cruise, coached by Prof. J. Wstellen, accompanied by Mr. Nielsen. They toured farms including the Sumner Barnell and E. Rediger’s Milford herd, reflecting strong local agricultural instruction and student achievement.
Roscoe S. Baker of Sidney a dental student at Nebraska University has attained scholastic standing to be named among students recognized for high scholarship at honors convocations to be held April 30 according to a note from the dean of student affairs.
Leonard Jones, a popular student and athlete at the local high school, won first prize in an arts contest held Saturday at Wesleyan University during the annual high school day. He received a handsome gold medal for his achievement.
Sidney yesterday faced heavy clouds that obscured the eclipse view. Weather prevented observers from seeing the celestial event as scheduled, leaving the inland sky overcast and dim.
Authorities on land values foresee a strong return to land buying this year and for several years, until farm and ranch property regain pre inflation values from 1919 to 1920. J A Bentley, president of the Bentley Land Company of Sidney, notes the firm’s 35 years of activity across western Nebraska Colorado and western Kansas and cites past seeding figures and large trading during 1919 20.
E M Hawkins of Scottsbluff leases the Roof Garden at Alliance and work begins to convert the hall into an athletic club. A chain of gyms across Western Nebraska is planned with Edwards Hawkins promising full gym facilities, showers, and equipment valued at about 500 dollars. Emily Vaughn, a noted lightweight fighter, is in the Hawkins stable and bouts are expected at the roof garden once open. Members will gain access to the complete gymnasium facilities after joining the athletic club.
Mr and Mrs Raymond Breternitz of Kimball were lightly injured when their car overturned near Dix on Monday morning while returning from a dance at Krueger’s Lake. Mrs Breternitz suffered a broken collar bone and was treated at Taylor hospital before being sent home.
Active construction on the Lincoln highway resumes for several miles around Potter after a halt due to cold weather. The Reel outfit operates with many workers and machines, and plans to push the project forward under Lowery and Tue.
E. D. Cooley and Orville Brooks perish when their boat capsizes in the water during a fishing trip. Heavy clothing and boots hinder swimming efforts as others attempt rescue.
The Farmers Union board set Saturday June 11 as the date for this year’s annual picnic at Krueger’s Lake after last year’s fairgrounds showing lacked shade. Ray R Swift says music, speakers, and entertainment will fill the day with prizes for the winding ball team, sports for rural children, and demonstrations funded by a 25 dollar pot. Speaking continues on page 8. Also reported, Orville Brooks and E. D. Cooley drowned at Harris Lake when their boat capsized during a fishing trip near Oshkosh, search teams recovering Brooks’ body as wind hindered effort and the boat sank with them.
The Altar society of the Catholic church plans its annual spring bazaar and dance for Thursday night this week. Residents who enjoyed the bazaar supper and dance are invited to attend. the supper will be served by society members and the dance begins at nine.
