Sidney merchants report last week’s Easter rush boosted spring retail activity across clothing groceries and general stores. Prices rose slightly enabling a visible volume increase from 1934 while moisture boosted consumer spending. Shoppers bought high quality goods and Eastern Sidney Cheyenne County enjoyed a colorful day with many new gowns.
Nebraska poultry raisers are viewed favorably as present conditions favor production. L. B. Snyder of the rural economics department at the college of agriculture notes production has been low and storage stocks are small. Meat prices are high and unlikely to fall much. Despite higher feed costs in 1934, increased feed use could prove profitable. Grain prices may drop later, aiding farmers whose flocks mature for fall production.
A meeting of those interested in forming a softball schedule for the year will be held in the basement of the city auditorium Wednesday night at 8 o'clock. Those wishing to sponsor teams or participate or contribute ideas for a satisfactory summer organization are urged to attend. the city has equipment from last year and ready to furnish this popular evening sport.
The Rotary club entertained four guests of honor at the weekly meeting. Honorees included Maxine Fulton, Maxine Ferris and Darwyn Johnson from the senior high school, and Nevin Slawson and Doris Long from the junior high. Lois Hardy sang, with Carolyn Ken accompanying. all are students at the University of Nebraska.
Sidney observed Arbor Day by planting seedling trees delivered by the American Legion. Several hundred seedlings were set out Sunday and Monday to restore Nebraska’s depleted tree stocks, aiding long term growth and shade.
With seed shortages of standard annual forage crops farmers in Nebraska consider substitute crops for 1935. Traditional crops like sorgo millet, sudan grass and other standard varieties may be replaced by alternatives based on relative productivity and adaptation in Nebraska's growing conditions.
Carl Feldman, chairman of the Cheyenne County Wheat Production Control association, says a Telegraph quote misrepresented him. He declined to localize his views, asserting only that industrial interests back a campaign against the AAA and that rural concerns oppose same.
Kansas farmers face severe crop losses from black blizzards and land damage yet State Senator Simon Fishman of Greeley County rejects desert forecasts. He cites past hardships and predicts rains will return with bountiful wheat, noting East photographers may document large piles of grain awaiting elevators. Fishman has spoken to AAA officials in Washington and plans to accept a major AAA position.
The bureau of agricultural economics notes higher prices for farmers products mirror rising farmhand wages. After a 1929 decline and price collapse, farmhand wages reach their highest since 1932 while farm prices rise faster than wages. The price-wage ratio moves from 93 to 115 and the price index climbs from 82 to 108 versus 1910-14 normal of 100.
Western Nebraska farmers gather at North Platte on May 4 for feeders day at the experimental substation. Attendees will learn about silage cloth tests in full feeding and winter calves, a tankage versus cotton seed meal comparison for wintering and full feeding calves, and feeding on native grass and alfalfa pasture.
The annual spring banquet golf tournament at Sidney country club is underway with play due by Sunday April 28 ahead of the Monday April 29 banquet. A representative from the Bureau of Animal Industry will discuss tuberculosis eradication in cattle at a Sidney meeting in the district court room on Wednesday April 24 at 7 15 p m. The talk notes Nebraska testing work funded by the federal Jones Connelly bill and the option for government veterinarians to assist producers with test costs and indemnities. Also touched on Bang’s disease abortion but briefly, as owners await cooperative supervision for tuberculosis control.
Sidney hosts the county wide spelling tests for grades seven to eight in oral rounds to determine the county champion who will advance to the state contest in Omaha. Written tests start at 10 a m at the junior high with oral rounds after lunch until one remains. Fifth and sixth graders compete separately. rules mirror state contest. Local newspapers assist due to Mrs. Gertrude Nelson’s illness. teachers have been advised.

Schedule spans Lancaster Edison Murray Aurora Beemer Tuesday and more across the state ending late April. Diverse program includes singings readings plays and clubs contributing to the event.
A Nebraskan county agent Nat Tolman promotes a 12 point safer farming plan for western Nebraska. Goals include a year’s feed, family meat supply, a garden and canning budget, dairy needs met, 30 hens, wind erosion prevention, terrace or drainage where needed, 4H or club involvement, home conveniences, farmstead beautification, and a clothing budget to stretch farm income.
H P Holm of Omaha, FHA risk examiner, told about 400 building supply dealers and contractors at Scottsbluff that federal credit facilities and surveys support home modernization. He urged industry salesmen to complete the sale to boost employment, noting loans through approved lenders and organized suppliers. Applications for title 2 construction are open, with insurers backing insured first mortgages.
O. W. Bybee a Kimball insurance salesman was arrested on a charge of obtaining money under false pretense after collecting 121.87 from Fred W. Lockwood on January 4, 1935 while posing as an authorized Bankers Union Life Insurance representative. Bybee pled guilty before County Judge Vogler and bonded $1,000, with possible sentencing if the district judge accepts the plea. trial and potential hearing dates pending equity terms and fall jury term.
Easter observances filled Sidney churches with sunrise services at 5 a.m. and regular events through the day. Pastors tied the Resurrection story to current problems, urging hope in the Easter Spirit. Musical presentations and communion or baptismal services complemented the celebration.
Twenty six new marks were set as grade school athletes competed at Sidney high school track for the fourth annual Cheyenne county meeting. Sidney dominated class A winning by a wide margin over Potter, while St Pauls Luther an school edged Salem 42 to 3 in class B. Notable records include Lundberg 50 yard dash 6.2 seconds, Eldon Oades 75 yard dash 9.1 seconds, Oades shot put 36 feet 7 inches, Durnell high jump 5 feet 4 inches, Durnell broad jump 17 feet 7 inches, and Lundberg pole vault.
A pretty wedding was held Easter Sunday at Christ Episcopal Church as Julia Curless daughter of Mr and Mrs J A Curless became the bride of Dale Chambers son of Mr and Mrs C P Chambers. Rev Peter J Spehr officiated. The couple and families gathered for a wedding dinner at the bride’s home.
Bernard Allen, held at Colorado Springs, pleaded guilty in county court to bigamy. He had eloped with Elsie Maxfield of Bartlett in January 1933 and later deserted, leaving a child. M. V. Hallgren accompanied Deputy Tebrinke, guiding Allen’s return to Bridgeport with his daughter. Judge Henry Vogler presided. sentencing set before Judge Tewell.
The chamber renews focus on roads by appointing Paul L. Martin R E Roche and M W Osborn to push completion to the Colorado line. They aim to route via Sidney if feasible while respecting federal plans. They also invite Omaha boosters and promise a free dance, with other minor issues discussed.

Grand Island star Dixon and Colorado standout Showboat McQuillan agreed to terms for the American Legion fight card in Sidney on Monday May 13. Dixon’s contract was received yesterday and McQuillan’s followed. both are touted as top middleweights and promised to thrill fans with their murderous punchery in a high profile bout.
The Sidney Rifle club closed its indoor season with a loss to Pine Bluffs at the third annual small bore tournament in Albin Wryo. Sidney finished second, defeating Bridgeport Kimball and Albin, andMelvin Sweet won first in the individual re entry with 284. The club won 23 of 29 matches, including the Nebraska state championship. in the national shoot Sidney was fourth in its league after a weeks long tie for first. Don Brewer won the Bauman trophy with 13 firsts to Sweet's 12.
The city awarded the annual auditing contract to Carl J. Morgan of Scotts Bluff for 100 dollars, ending Hanson Audit of Fremont. The council also ordered 500 feet of 21 inch hose from Eureka Fire Hose Co. An adjourned session was set for tonight to discuss finances ahead of year-end closing, and two weeks hence new councilmen will assume office.
The new telephone directory for Sidney and Potter is being prepared in the Telegraph’s commercial printing department and will be ready for distribution by May first. Manager E. E. White emphasizes accuracy and invites changes or installations today or tomorrow to avoid delaying printing.
Bridgeport chosen by the Nebraska Library Association for one of its eight district meetings this spring. Miss Louise Estill, Bridgeport public library librarian, announces the event for Thursday, April 25, led by Helen Meisinger, Lincoln Public Library vice president. Visiting librarians and trustees from the region are expected. Topics include librarian certification, publicity for libraries, children’s books and reading, and new books for adults.
Peter J. Spehr, newly appointed minister at Christ Episcopal church, arrived Saturday from Webster South Dakota and appeared at Easter service Sunday. He was warmly welcomed by a large crowd of worshipers and the service left them highly satisfied. Rev. Spehr brings his wife and a three year old son to Sidney.
A. E. Anderson, state and federal agricultural statistician, counters reports of severe land injury from recent dust storms. He notes eastern wheat in fine condition with slight abandonment in Nuckolls and Thayer counties after inspecting the winter wheat belt. Much winter wheat in the panhandle counties will be abandoned.
The annual Easter Monday charity ball held by the Kings Daughters drew a big crowd last evening. The event featured colorful Easter gowns and lively entertainment, with many out of town guests in attendance. Arcadians provided the music.
Wheat allotment board members from several western Nebraska counties met at the district court room in Sidney for a conference on compliance and referendum related to the 1935 program. A corn-hog committee meeting is set for today in Kearney to discuss AAA work for the coming year.
