Nebraska farmers rush to sign corn hog contracts
More than two-thirds of Nebraska’s eligible farmers had signed corn hog reduction contracts by the deadline. State administrator W H Brokaw reported nearly 85 000 signers by noon, with final tallies expected before midnight. The program will remove over 1 730 000 acres from corn production and cut hog numbers by about a quarter million. Cheyenne County shows strong participation, with base corn acres about 84 909 and hogs about 37 117, while Custer County has 3 197 signers and 322 437 base acres. Continued on Page 6, Column 1.

Speed train display draws about 4000 in Sidney audience
About 4,000 people viewed the new Union Pacific speed train during a two hour Sidney exhibition Saturday morning. Railway officials counted 3,149 in the coaches while roughly 1,000 more viewed from outside. The train entered Sidney at 8 48 a m moving near 60 mph and faster to 75 mph before the city stop.

Rural Rehabilitation Director White says broad state interest exists in the rural rehabilitation program while many confuse it with the subsistence homestead plan for relief near industrial centers. The program does not move families out of towns. it assists relief recipients to become self sustaining at their present locations by matching needy families with vacant farm houses, small plots, and part time labor for rent. As funds permit, supports such as cows, pigs, or chickens may be provided with repayment in labor, and work projects will grant repayment credits.
