Leroy King was shot in the chest area and badly wounded by Willie Singleton after a suspected robbery attempt on Persimmon Street. Police later arrested Willie Robinson as a suspect in the robbery plot. Two people were injured in New Year’s Eve traffic incidents. H. D. Geiger of Lemon Street suffered head and facial cuts in a Marine and Government streets collision involving a car driven by Paul Geissler, a marine engineer. A second incident at Spring Hill Avenue and It involved William Todd of St Stephens Road, struck by a car driven by O W Stokes, with only minor injuries.
A New Year editorial urges Mobile merchants to back buying freedom of Cochrane Bridge by purchasing the bridge for two million dollars. The plan would toll-free all 15 state bridges, funding via a one-cent gas tax and reducing deficits, to attract customers from Baldwin, Monroe, and Escambia counties and lift Alabama’s highway system.
Special session proposes a state bridge corporation to take over Cochrane Bridge with bonded debt. Funeral services for Dr Frank Ross Sherard 60 were held at Roche mortuary chapel after his death at 309 Government Street. A Mobile native born September 24 1872 he studied at the University of Pennsylvania and was a prominent surgeon. He served as vice president of City Hospital staff and supported the Alabama Maternity Home now the Bishop Allen Home.
