Yale researchers report chimpanzees tested with striped patterns can distinguish shapes as well as humans. One subject matched adult human eyesight, with another near that level, while a third’s performance varied by its physiological state.
Local notes record redecorating at the Lincoln Telephone office and several travels and visits. Miss Jessie Glovance left for Omaha for employment, and Mrs. Mary Drake with daughter Nell visited relatives in Western. Eunice Garber is home for summer after teaching. Esther Bristor of Diller visits the Fahrenwalds. Mrs Kuper and Betty Baker visit the Greenwoods. For sale hogs and feed offered by C. C. Andrews. Chester Wilcox and H. M. Manning attend American Legion meeting in Lincoln. Marshall of Lincoln and E. L. Jenkins of Fairbury visit Steele City. Emma Pearson returns from Leavenworth after grandson James Miller’s operation. accompanied by Chester Pearson and wife. Hazeldean Manning chosen to appear before an American Legion committee May 26 at the Fairbury courthouse for a medal presentation.
Corporal Donald Fahrenwald writes from Fort Meade South Dakota to Friends about weather, a 9 am inspection by General McCoy, a baseball team, CCC presence, summer hike in the Black Hills, daily 35 to 40 mile rides, post theatre shows, and his promotion to Corporal on May 6th while awaiting letters from Steele City friends.
Next Sunday morning Memoria services will be held with an evening service on Memoria Day. Mrs Agnes Crane Wright plans the programs and invites all ages to attend. Last evening will be the final service until further notice. The Daily Vacation Bible School begins June 4 with parental cooperation urged. Pentecost was observed at both services and music was led by Mrs Cletus Bugbee’s class. Entertained guests at dinner included Mrs Mary Cassell and others. flowers and iris decorated the home. Agnes Crane Wright reviewed a Rose O’Neill book in the afternoon.
Memorial Day will be observed in Steele City on Wednesday May 30 with the American Legion and Auxiliary planning a program in the hall at 2 00 o clock. Rev A S Dodgson of Fairbury Baptist church will address the gathering with songs by the church choir and a solo by Mrs E O Cassell. Afterward services will be held at the cemetery with Legion and auxiliary members participating and ex service men urged to attend if possible.
The Ladies Aid will hold a called business meeting Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock. All ladies are requested to be present. Mrs. Pearson serves as President.
Following the usual custom all banks of Jefferson County will close Thursday afternoon beginning June 7 in Farmers State Bank Steele City Nebraska.
Public notice promotes a stomach gas remedy claiming quick relief. It mentions Adlerike ep and Palmer's Drug Store. The fragment warns gas stems from bone poisons and touts sound sleep benefits.
Mrs. C B Callaway president of the Fairbury Woman's Club delivered an engaging and informative talk on Birds to nineteen members of the Steele City Woman's Club at the May meeting hosted by Mrs. Tranquiline B Taylor. Guests Miss Leota Earhart and Mrs. Harley Thrapp attended.
The regular meeting of the W. C. TOU. will be held with Mrs. Win Woods on Friday June 1 at 2 p.m. Ways will be provided for those who wish to go. Any one interested in the work of this organization is welcome to attend.
In the County Court of Jefferson County Nebraska the State of Nebraska to all persons interested in the estate of Samuel I Kurts deceased: you are notified the final report and accounts are on file and a hearing is set for June 15 at 9:00 A.M. to determine the settlement of the estate. Clifford R Lillibridge signs as administrator.
Graduation exercises marked the end of another Steele City school year with the 1934 class receiving diplomas from Fay D. Clark of the Board of Education. The ceremony featured an invocation, music, speeches, and awards, with colors of old rose and gold. Eighth grade graduates also received diplomas, with blue and gold colors and yellow rose as the flower.
Report shows year ending April 3 134 with cash 1718.39 and cemetery fund 209.40. Total balance 192779 with expenses to date 896.10. Carried forward balance from April 8 1983. Marcella Sampson's School in Dist 80 closed this week after a pupil picnic by the river.
A notice invites parents to enroll boys and girls aged above five in tap dancing at the hall. A meeting is set for Thursday afternoon May 21 at 2 30 to discuss lessons. Price is one dollar seventy five cents for four lessons paid in advance. Acrobatics may be included for talented pupils.
Steele City girls beat Ellis 9 to 8 in a close game with coach Mr. Peterson commended for guiding the squad. The Steele City boys also traveled to Ellis and returned with a victory, after a long evening of play.
After the girls game Steele City led 18-6 and the boys 22-8 in a strong doubleheader against Diller. Two kitten ball games are set for Saturday with Beatrice and Odell as opponents. Steele City edged Fairbury 3-2 in a Big Ten clash at home. Next Sunday Reynolds visits Steele City.
