Farmers in Jefferson County faced rain and impassable roads hindering Wheat referendum and corn hog contract signing at local polling places. Eligible voters may cast ballots and sign contracts at the county courthouse daily until 5 p.m. next Saturday May 25 to avoid delays in benefit payments.
Diller and surrounding regions faced record rainfall with over seven inches since May 7 and more than ten inches total. Flood waters rose rapidly, flooding fields, sweeping debris across roads, and prompting shelter use near Steele City. Local families and workers described road blockages, river bridge dangers, and continued rainfall affecting daily life and railroad maintenance.
May 17 gathering at Sir Joseph Rothmeyer home honored Mrs Harold Erickson before her marriage. Fifteen farmers voted in the wheat referendum last Saturday. Memorial services planned with H D Bancroft and H F Matoon. attendance hampered by rain. Hazeldean Manning earned a Home Making Certificate of Honor with grades above ninety. Mother and Daughters banquet planned at church Friday night. Rev Filinger away for two weeks at General Assembly in Cincinnati. Local events include Loyal Ladies entertainment, public admission ten cents. Various residents visiting, traveling or hosting guests around Steele City and Fairbury.
The Degree of Honor lodge held Mother's Day May 13 at Grayce Palmer's home with guest mothers and a program. Attendees included Mrs. Alice Palmer and many others, plus refreshments. District No. 3 closed school last Friday with a basket dinner and ball game led by teacher Mildred Kenning.
A baseball game between Fairbury and Steele City is scheduled here on Sunday beginning at 2 30 o clock local time.
Fay D. Clark offers household goods for sale at public auction on Wednesday May 29 at the Clark residence in Steele City. An itemized list is available in the Wills.
Ten members of the B. B. Kensington met at Mrs WL Woods home on Tuesday May 14 for an afternoon meeting. Members responded to roll call with poems and plan the next gathering at Mrs Bernice Stefford home on May 25 for Memorial Day observances.

Mrs Ralph Ahlers visited Hanover last week to see her father William Shedo before returning home Saturday. Charlie Weber and H Justin built a creamery for Will Stewart Sr this past week. The Little Blue River flooded its banks early week and G B Barr’s fields flooded though corn not yet planted. Marhe Taylor and Mr Dixson took their pupils from Washington Park Friday for a picnic. Hanover visited Mrs Nina Oswald and family dJaft. Friday Harry Elder and wife left for California to be at the bedside of their son Donald who is seriously ill. Mrs Harry Mahlman and son Maurice left Sunday to visit Frank Mahlman and wife in Marysville then Mrs Mahlman’s sister Mrs Jesse Leiber and husband at Waterville before returning home. Mrs Harry Mowrey and Mrs Réna Mowrey were called to Lincoln Saturday to be with Mr Mowrey who had leg surgery. They returned Monday reporting Mr Mowrey progressing as well as possible. Wm Cumro and wife were business callers to Washington Saturday.
