Rural subscribers of The Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company in Steele City learn a new emergency line ring. The code uses short long short rings to signal real emergencies such as fires. The general line ring remains for non emergency information prior to transmission.
The Lincoln Telephone News features Betty Jane Earhart who moved from Steele City to Lincoln to join the accounting staff. She is praised for securing desirable employment soon after graduating from business college. The B B Kensington group met April 27 at Mrs. Jennie Thompson’s with thirteen members and three visitors. Mrs. Fernie Lawrence gave talks on The Life of Sterling Morton and Andrew Carnegie. Refreshments were provided by the hostess. The next meeting is planned for May at the homes of Mrs. Agnes and Thelma Wright.
Mrs Bertha Garber leaves her duties at the telephone office for a week long trip. She travels with her daughter Mrs Joe Rothmeier and husband to Topeka to visit her eldest daughter Mrs Harold Erickson and husband. She also plans to visit a sister in Hayes Kansas.
The Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Co issued new telephone directories this week. Mrs. J. W. Ahlers of Hollenberg is seriously ill in the local hospital.
In Jefferson County Nebraska May Lowe administratrix petitions in County Court to amend the inventory and final decree in the estate of George Wright deceased. The petition seeks reallocation of Lot Five Block One Perse and Thompson Subdivision Steele City to heirs Louis F. Wright George E. Wright and Clyde C. Wright per the probate final decree. County Judge Ec R Bee signs with dates April 23 and May 7 1937.
The United States Civil Service Commission announces open competitive examinations for several positions. Listings include Examiner estate tax at $3,200 yearly, Senior superintending marine engineer at $4,600, Marketing specialist Indian arts and crafts at $3,200, production advisor at $2,600, all under various departments. May 15 is the deadline for Jefferson county farmers to file Statement of intentions for the 1937 Agricultural Conservation Program. Edwin A. Jacobs states that those missing the date will not be considered in performance supervision and no extension will be granted.
Mr and Mrs Chris Andersen returned home Tuesday from Marquette after a short visit with their mothers. Laipply Mortuary W C Palmer representative handles funeral and ambulance service in Steele City Fairbury 303. Miss Helen Wehbling University of Nebraska senior spent the weekend with her parents. Lohman family moved Wednesday to a residence they recently bought from Mrs Arner. Howard Deems and family of Pawnee City visited Deems mother here last Sunday. Hugh Greenwood and family moved earlier this week to the residence of Mrs Lowe.
Miss Lulu Petsch assists at the local telephone office this week. An advertisement offers tomatoes and cabbage at 3 dozen for 25 cents. George Bax advertises sale of a residence in Steele City, with H. W. Had dix referenced for details.
Mrs Clyde Criner visited her daughter Mrs Stanley Troxal on Wednesday afternoon. Henry Meyers repaired a wind mill for Eph Oaks last Friday. Vera and Dora Janssen visited home folk over the weekend. Henry Meyers and family spent Friday with the J Malady home. Donald Welch and family visited relatives on Sunday. Willie Meyers and brother joined Will Jones and wife at the brick yard. Mrs Henry Meyers assisted Mrs Malady with papering last Tuesday.
The Missionary Society will meet Wednesday May 12 at Mrs Wm Woods home. The program includes Devotionals and a talk titled Life of Clara Barton by Mrs G B Cassell plus readings by Mrs Lena Dill Mis sionary Review Maude Kendall Haddix. Meeting starts at 2 30 PM. Mrs Arthur Hardesty and Mr Arthur Hardesty announce the birth of their daughter Larreta Ninette on Wednesday April 28 at their home. The family invites congratulations from relatives and friends.
A large group met in the church parlors Wednesday afternoon for the May session of the Ladies' Aid. Mrs. Deems led the devotional, followed by a program honoring Mother's Day with readings and songs by Mrs. Violet Thrapp, Mrs. Beulah Hughes, Miss Bessie Rucker, and others. Refreshments of pineapple ice cream cookies and coffee were served at social hour by hostesses Mrs. Alf Drexler and others.
Lady Mrs J Thornbus accompanied by Vance Below and Robert Haddix embark on a Western States business visit lasting several days. Henry Hiez of Poyrnout!s sea joins the group for part of the trip.
