Recalls Steele City Coal Famine of 1851 and 1930s

A distant reader recalls Steele City coal famines as winter hardship similar to the present at Thedford. The clipping describes a 19th century crisis with a dozen men organizing to meet freight from Jenkins Mill and distributing coal, including Drury the local druggist who led looting of a coal car and its sale after arrival.

Mother's Day Choir Program at Steele City Presbyterian

Steele City held a regular luncheon at Darlings Cafe where permanent chairman was elected for the Commercial Club and T. W. Zoellin named secretary. Members discussed the Jitney Show and the Steele City picture show as the central topic of business.

A three year old named Avis Pingle had a Tuesday birthday party at Lernoun, hosted by her parents. guests included Me and Mrs Conrad Kiskailt Mrs Ernest Lawrence and others. The event featured ice cream cake and gifts. Separately, Mr and Mrs Roy Shank and two daughters hosted a dinner in Hanover Kansas for Ernest Lawrence and Peter Eckhart as he returned to railroad duties in Topeka Capesfield Nebraska. Carl H Barber of Steele City Nebraska underwent surgery at the Topeka Security Benefit Hospital.
