The Steele City school presented the two act operetta China Silk at the Improvement Company hall on April 28 directed by Miss Bulls. Rosemary, Wee Long, and the Ling Chi feast drive a tale of mistaken identity and a wedding, aided by an elaborate costume display.
Despite bad roads a fine congregation attended Sunday services. The Aweice group in the choir delivered splendid numbers and both youth groups held engaging meetings. The evening discussion on Stewardships drew many participants and a strong social tone accompanied by a church social. The Men’s club event featured music, ice cream, quilies and coffee and strong community fellowship. The church also officiated at funerals for Mrs Coral Ahlers and Frank Rathbun with condolences offered to both families. Next Sunday a choir group from Diller Congregational church will sing during mining service and Mothers Day observances are planned.
The Women’s club met at Mrs. Robert Thompson’s home on April 17 with ten members. A business session included parliamentary drill led by Mrs. Kendall and a scene picture sent to the state club contest. Mrs. Thompson won a prize for best scene picture and $200 was sent to the club. Mrs. Cassell presented the Health in the Home lesson. Refreshments followed, and Harold Staley and wife made a business trip to Fairbury. The Heady Hotel and Cafe reports a new cooling system adding ice cream as a delicacy.
W C Palmer made a business trip to Beatrice Thursday. Many locals and visitors are noted in weekly entries including Harold Staley Clarence Walkin and wives, Jack Brei and wife, J O Swett, I R Carmine and family, Effie Evans, Andrew Phelps and family, and Clarence Walkin ard wife. Crepe paper and "Roses for Mothers Day" advertised by Home Gift Shop. Andrew Phelps is described as extremely ill with chronic poor health. Repair work on Clarks store roof noted.
A five ton capacity ice box is nearing completion this week at Clarks Store under Steele City contractor Ouke Franzen. The ice will be replenished with a manufactured product from a neighboring town to meet local demand, continuing the store's service to patrons. Snow was used as a substitute by many in the state due to the absence of a local ice harvest this year.
