B B Kensington Club Holds May Meeting For Patriotic Verse

The B B Kensington met May 25 at Mrs Addie Woods home with 14 members and 5 children present. A patriotic roll call and Gettysburg address reading by Mrs Jennie Thompson and a reading by Mrs Agnes Wright followed by refreshments. Next meeting June at Mrs Mattie Wolkens home. Rain measured 1.12 inches, easing a moisture shortage.

Bonny June Winner Receives Legion Award at 8th Grade Commencement

Bonny June Winner of Steele City received the Legion citizenship medal at Jefferson county graduation exercises in Fairbury. Read on the county honors roll were Bonny June Winner Dorothy Hartgraves and Doris Outhier all with grades above ninety in fourteen subjects. The American Legion medals honor one boy and girl in area schools each year. Last year Steele City produced Arlene Wilcox and Freddie Drexler as recipients. The presentation Tuesday was a welcome surprise for Bonny June.

Home talent program set at opera house on Saturday

The opera house here will stage a home talent program Saturday evening, June 5, organized by Harlan Gehrt the local recreational supervisor. Readings and musical numbers include Forrest Moshier Carol Else Ruby Dean Raymond Wath ers Hetry Lee Wenz Shirley McLachlin Jeanne Bugbee Joan Weaver Del Wehling Nelle Megonigle Babetta Hughes Evelyn Roelfs with various acts and solo performances.

Donkey Kittenball Draws Large Attendance

A donkey kittenball game between Steele City and Diller drew a large crowd on Tuesday evening. Eleven donkeys performed amid many spills and thrills noted by score keeper Fred Kyle who lost count. Both towns claimed victory and a new croquet set arrives for local recreation use.

Young Woman's Guild Plans June Meeting by the River

The Young Woman's Guild to meet on June 10. A riverbank picnic is planned for 6 30 with a covered dish. Members needing rides meet in front of the drug store. Ina Ellison leads devotionals and Gertrude Wenling the season.

Birthday celebration at Leonard Payne home

The Roy Corbin, Hugh Garrett and Joe James families along with LC Payne and wife Donna Kyle and Jerrold and Joan Weaver gathered at the Leonard H. Payne home last Sunday to celebrate the birthdays of Mrs. Hugh Garrett and Leonard Payne. A bountiful covered dish dinner was served at noon.

Joe Wilcox of Pawnee City browsed the Rocky Hollow neighborhood on Wednesday buying cream and eggs. J H Malady and wife visited Henry Meyers home Thursday evening. Irene Janssen and Mary Andersen called at the Malady home Friday morning. Mrs Janssen and Herman left Saturday for Hamburg Iowa to visit Mrs Long. Henry Meyers and wife went to Diller Sunday afternoon. Blaine James and wife toured Hanover Kansas Sunday afternoon.

Presbyterian Church Prepares Vacation Bible School Closing

The church holds closing exercises for the Daily Vacation Bible School next Sunday at regular hour with an exhibit of handwork. Evening Seniors gather at 6 30 for an outdoor lunch outing led by Ruth Gretzinger. Intermediates meet at the church and the Young Women's Guild plans and Missionary Society meets midweek. Memorial Day service featured American Legion participation and cemetery veterans’ graves.

Get acquainted party at Harold Skirdla home

A Sunday gathering at Harold Skirdla's home included Joe Barta and family Adam Wasserman and wife John Saathoff and wife John Franken and wife Fred Bartels and family and John Andrews and wife. Lunch ended at five. Albert Hance Jr moved from DeWitt CCC camp to Nelson Nebraska for promotion. Dwight Lowe leaves business college for a bank job in Lincoln. Mrs. John Outhier assists at Morgan hospital.

Hanover Beats Steele City 6 to 5 in Season Opener

Hanover defeated Steele City 6 to 5 on the road last Sunday in the season opener. The Steele City club logged its fourth game of the year as visitors joined a busy schedule with residents and guests dropping by for visits and local events including graduations and a Pythian Sisters food sale.

Mrs Ed Haston left for Savannah Missouri for medical treatment. Many locals traveled to California for work. Frank Hoxie of Shenandoah Iowa visited. Winsor family from Glenville Nebraska visited with G A Lewis and Lucy Weber. Numerous relatives and neighbors visited, and one inch of rain fell Saturday night. Community club met at the schoolhouse. Steele City youths performed. An infant named Larry Lee was born to Mr and Mrs Baird Goff of Endicott at Morgan hospital.
