Francis H. Sisson of the American Bankers Association argues banking mirrors local conditions and people. He says bank loan and note histories reveal regional health, crop risks, or economic trends, and that banks are inseparable from the fate of the public and the country.
A New York savings bank earned 6 percent on an $80 000 investment after spending 40 000 to modernize 40 year old lower East Side tenement buildings it foreclosed on. The remodel included oil heating and incinerators, increasing annual rent to 14 000 and promising payback in three years.
Harry Weber and Elton Golds berry were injured Saturday when their car overturned. Scalding water from a broken radiator poured on them as they were pinned inside. They were bedfast for a few days under Dr. I. N. Thornton McCurdy. Mrs. Clark McCurdy of Minneapolis visited the family. A lady's handbag was found and the owner can claim by identifying it and paying for this ad.
Local notes report a few immune sows for sale and a string of summer moves. C. C. Andrews and family visited Strang friends Tuesday while Glen Riddle and Donald Hughes headed to Denver Colorado. Goldie Woods visits the H Staley home near Hebron. Milo Hanson and family moved from Steele City to a farm two miles northeast. Dell Greenwood welcomed a son on Wednesday July 5. Mrs. Greenwood rests in Odell General Hospital. Henry Scheele and family moved from Mrs John Wilson residence to the country.
Mrs J E Hartzel and grandson Harold Fisher of Lincoln were guests at Robert Thompson home last week. Mrs L W J Wenz returned from Scottsbluff where her father J Mauck was ill. Tom Hickey of Council Bluffs Iowa visited the Garber sisters for several days. Helen Sampson returned home from Woodward Oklahoma where she stayed with grandparents and attended school. Mrs Ray Wells' mother Beloit died in Greeley Colorado prompting a family trip. Mr and Mrs Van De Stege and two children of Nampa Idaho and Mrs Numbers of Boise Idaho arrived for an extended visit with Mr and Mrs W C Palmer. Barney Phillips and Jerry Swanson of St Joseph Missouri and Mary Alyce Sears of Decatur Kansas spent the Fourth with the Garbers. Sears remained in Steele City until Thursday. Euniece Garber accompanied to Decatur for a several weeks stay with Miss Sears.
Mrs H C McKibbon is in Stockton Kansas this week visiting her parents. Mr and Mrs Charles Donegan of Greenleaf Kansas visited Greenleaf's father Charles Silkett here on the Fourth. The threshing season has begun with wheat yields from ten to twenty bushels per acre. On Thursday the Fuqua Brothers were threshing for Thad Shepherd and Joe Davis was threshing for Earl Cooper.
A morning program last Sunday drew a large appreciative audience. About seventy enrolled with over sixty attending on average. Eight teachers led the session and Harold Manley led an evening discussion. Plans call for a social hour at 7 30 next Sunday evening followed by a young people choir under Mrs. E C Cassell. The Missionary Society hosts a church ice cream social next Wednesday evening. All are invited and a large youth turnout is hoped for next Sunday with a sermon aimed at the young people.
Chas Lowe of the University of Minnesota plans a week in Steele City before going to Minneapolis for the summer. He will not enter Minnesota Law School in the fall. He has affiliated with Sigma Chi and Delta Sigma Rho and has participated in the Gerrie Club Masquers varsity debate teams and University Theatre. He is the son of Mrs. F. V. Lowe.
Grace Evelyn Greenwood daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Greenwood married Alton Mote of Alliance Nebraska at the home of the bride's parents in Fairbury. Rev Townsend officiated at four o clock and the couple will reside in Alliance after a wedding trip to the World’s Fair. Grace has taught in Minatare schools for six years and is a niece of B A Greenwood.
Tuesday guests at E. J. Wells home included Mrs Freeman and daughter Mary, Mr and Mrs Geo Knight of Lincoln, and H W Douglas with daughter Dorothy Ruth. Victor Van Scooter of California visits his sister Mrs G B Wright. C C Andrews shipped four carloads of fat cattle to market earlier this week.
The Farmers Elevator shipped a carload of wheat on Wednesday, marking a notable shipment for the cooperative. The event highlights regional grain movement and logistics activity in the area.
The W C T U circulates and files a petition opposing liquor licenses. Ninety one signatures, nearly all of the last election voters, show Steele City will likely remain dry. Opponents anticipated action, while wets hide in hopes no move is made to block their plans.
First prize awarded to Virginia Niemeyer of Diller for 991 points out of 1000 with a $2.00 prize. Jackie Dean Solon of Fairbury earned second with 990 points and $1.75. Dr. I N Morgan led the judging with help from Dr. Edmund Fairbury Dr. Ellis Diller and Legion Auxiliary members.
The Steele City Fourth of July event stood out among recent celebrations despite a late start. The parade began at 1 pm and the day built momentum into two public dances in the evening. A large crowd watched, as a colored orchestra from Omaha performed unique music that drew many spectators.
Albert Hance was summoned to Stockton Kansas last week due to his father’s illness, returning to assist family members and support care efforts.
