Jefferson County notes list Fair daily dates September 20 to 23 and include various community updates. Mentions Percy Kurtz seeking a plow contract, Jack Hughes visiting Fairbury, Dr. Leach the dentist, and multiple short notes on visits, travel, and family gatherings across Fairbury and surrounding towns.
The Presbyterian Church Missionary Society will gather at Mrs. H. M. Manning Wey’s home for a Japan lesson on August 10. The Young Married Woman’s class served ice cream on Wednesday evening at a street stand west of the bank corner. The ladies’ regular meeting last Tuesday planned two committees and a large display of needlework. The Nebraska state fair promotes clean entertainment excluding improper shows to protect 4 H and other youth, setting a positive example for morale.
Miss Margaret Gretzinger presented pupils in a home recital on July 29 with invited mothers as guests. Selections included The Cuckoo Clock, The Flower March, Home Sweet Home, Moon Rocket duet, and Minuet in G. Willie Silkett visited from Colorado. Mildred Kasparek and Mrs. Ella Babcock are noted among local names.
Senator Axtell said construction on the Steele City to Fairbury road will start once the right of way is secured and culverts grading will be finished this fall. He stressed the program completes all Jefferson county road work and explains federal aid matching with emergency funds. He urged future cross road projects to connect state highways.
Miss Wealthy Babcock visited Fairbury Wednesday. Elsie Walters from Harbine stayed with Lila McDonald Thursday. Hugh Greenwood visited Fairbury Tuesday. Harold Staley and wife were guests at his parents home near Hebron. Mrs. W. O. Bundy of Fairbury visited at her daughter’s in town Wednesday. L Wenz and family from Diller traveled to Omaha Wednesday. Mrs. N. M. Forsha improved after illness by Thursday. A Sunday gathering at Roy James home included all members except Howard Rathbun. Dean and Mrs. Dean of Doane College were elsewhere last week visiting.
Mrs. Blanche Jacques and two children from Alexandria and Mrs. Jacques sister Miss Hubbard of Lincoln were guests of Mrs. N. M. Forsha on Friday. Walter Willey said he had been in Nebraska for sixty years as of August 2. Steele City figures prominently in his long stay. W. D. Heady and helpers including Carl Mitchell Harold Martin and Ceoff Bracken returned Thursday from the Plymouth picnic. Mrs. G. B. Cassell remains under a doctor’s care this week.
Mrs. L. W. J. Wenm and Betty Lee are visiting in Diller for a few days this week.
