Mr and Mrs T W Zoellin and their little daughter Jean returned to Rochester Minnesota on Tuesday where Jean will receive treatment. Arthur Kozak accompanied them for medical attention.
Ed Fahrenwald and family arrived Sunday from Arkansas to visit his brother H J Fahrenwald and relatives in Endicott and Kansas. Lorraine Cassell returned to Hastings after a visit with the Cassell family. Several locals took trips or hosted guests including Dr George Duall and Helen, Ruth Garrett of Fairbury, and Banahaa family. New cars owned by Chester Scharmann and Wallace Palmer are noted.
Rev. Witherspoon of Denver spoke on God who is Sufficient to a sizable congregation last Sunday. He will preach again on Sunday August 6 inviting those unseen previously to join the larger service. Mrs Jack Hughs sang an Etude selection with simple, appealing delivery and Sunday school attendance rose to 81. Pearson's Jersey Milk is Gov T B tested and Bangs disease tested.
The Woman's Missionary Society will meet next Wednesday at 2 30 PM in the church. Hostesses are Mrs Gay Cassell and Mrs Ray Cassell. Program includes China and Missionary Personnel, Year Book devotion, Bible Study on The Gospels, readings and reviews, solo, and a Madame Chiang Kai-shek review. All women invited.
The B B Kensington group met July 23, 1989 at Mrs Edna Clark’s home with thirteen members, nine children, and one guitarist. After business, attendees played Chinese Checkers and shared a luncheon hosted by Mrs Clark. The next meeting is planned for August 8, 1939 at Mrs Catherine Dailey’s home.
Mr and Mrs Lawrence Carmichael and others visited Lincoln from Saturday to Sunday. Miss Anderson stayed in Lincoln after visiting the Carl Schulz home. Mr and Mrs Hubert Manning returned Monday from a two week vacation in Colorado and western Nebraska and attended the funeral of Agnes Monning near Daugherty as the primary purpose of the trip.
The Agricultural Marketing Service reports firmer domestic grain markets toward week's end, helped by spring wheat prospects and flour demand while winter wheat markets decline. Corn worsened by heat and drought in western belts, with world supply uncertain and projected 1989–90 world wheat use high.
Jefferson County farm agent Frank Flynn chaired a meeting in the district court room with 22 club leaders precinct committeemen and members to discuss Achievement Day Demonstration Day and the planned September county express event. Mrs. Howard Hardy was named committee chair to organize the August 25 events at City Park with expected large turnout.
Pharaby Boileau arrived from Denver Colorado for a month long visit with Mrs Haddix and family. She has been broadcasting from KLZ radio on the Lady Lend an Ear program and conducted her own fifteen minute program A Melody for You. Last summer she was a soloist with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra appearing at the Colorado Consistory Denver Theatre and Civic Center Amphitheatre.
Mrs. Mable Rucker of Boise Idaho, a niece of Elizabeth Rucker, stayed 4 percent as a guest at Elizabeth Rucker’s home on Saturday afternoon and evening. She was on her return trip from nearby Sencea Kansas after visiting her mother.
Mrs. Amy Fuqua returns home from Gooding Idaho after a two and a half month visit with her sons Fred George and Thomas. She reports a very enjoyable vacation and trip.
Twenty years ago the Steele City Press notes the upcoming Steele City chautauqua starting Wednesday August 20 for five days. Farmers blast ground dryness with dynamite for potatoes and chicken thieves are active in the area. The column lampoons July heat, daylight saving and frozen imagination as a humorous take on extreme weather.
At the regular meeting on Wednesday Miss Mary Andersen led devotionals and Mrs. Howard Wright gave an interesting reading. Dainty refreshments were served by a committee. Twenty five members attended and Mrs Jennie Hartzell of Lincoln joined.
Mr and Mrs J Weise and Harold Whitney took A C Potter to Byron last Sunday. Mrs Potter visited her daughter Mrs Welle for three weeks and also spent time with Mrs J E Swartz in Byron. Marvin Anderson and family of Kansas and Orville Belding with wife visited relatives. Margaret Anderson returned from a Black Hills and Mariglano trip where they visited Arcore Anderson and family. Lawrence Carmichael rests at home recuperating from injuries from an accident. Carl Lampe and family visited Lampe relatives in Brock before returning Friday. Lucy Anna Weber and Grant Wing of Hellenturg visited relatives Wednesday. Mary Drexler of Diller visited Jeanne Bugbee. Mrs Jennie Hartzell of Lincoln visits Steele City this week.
Mrs J H Malady attended a Lucies Aide meeting in Endicott Thursday noon. Dr D O Hughes of Fairbury called on his aunt Mrs Daugherty. Thursday Mrs Herman Fetsch was quite ill last week. Abelural market notes list various farm prices for corn, oats, and eggs with small shifts in price.
Jefferson County received 6243.36 from the state apportionment for July. The district share is prorated, with calculations showing 4369.81 for districts based on 4312 school age children. Eligibility requires school levy, nine month term, contracted district, and licensed teacher with certification. A mid year eighth grade exam was canceled for 1940. Local residents Mr and Mrs Lewis Christie of Beatrice visited, Oakley Goldsberry’s family hosted, and Melvin R McArtor of Swanton attended Steele City business.
Geology suggests the meteorite fragment from Can yon Diablo fell to Earth about 100 million years ago. Evidence from radioisotopes such as radium helium and lead is cited to support the dating.
