Reports say stone throwing and gunfire erupted when a mob attacked the plaza shouting against President Barillas. A battalion dispersed the crowd with bayonets and revolvers, leaving several wounded as troops regained control.
Fred A. Tyler, shot by Hezekiah Rankin on Thursday night, died Saturday night at Mrs. France’s boarding house Asheville N C. He had been improving, then worsened in the afternoon. His father arrived yesterday and took the body to Lynchburg Virginia on the 2 15 p m train today.
In Winston N C on September 25 Winston beat Richmond 13 to 12. Richmond hit four home runs while Winston connected three. Both teams are even in the series and tomorrow's game will decide the champions. A McGann starts for Winston with Rourke likely to pitch for Richmond.
On the diamond league action reported with several games halted by darkness and rain. Boston defeated New York 13–8 in the first game and 11–3 in the second. Brooklyn beat Philadelphia 8–1. Cleveland edged Chicago 14–13. Louisville overwhelmed Milwaukee 10–4. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati games noted. two rainouts in Philadelphia and Washington. St. Louis and Columbus did not play.
At Gravesend on Sept 29 Madstone Banquet Panhandle Lord Harry Neptune Stakes King Mac and John Cavanaugh won their respective races with times collapsing across the mile to 2 mile distances. At Gloucester N J on Sept 29 Mile Tatler Zingara Battle Cry Middlestone Eclipse Basil Duke led the day’s sprints and longer races with swift times.
The sixth report of the national civil service reform league criticizes the census bureau and its methods, blaming patronage for 1870 flaws and noting improvements in 1880 after removing partisanship. It urges full civil service reform and a nonpartisan system for future federal enumerations, signed by Foulke, Bonaparte, Dana, McVeagh, and Rogers.
Worcester mass Sept 29 The Democratic convention renominated Governor Russell by acclamation and nominated General John W Corcoran for Lieut Governor. A platform praising free schools honest money and alliance with the Democratic party was adopted. The speech emphasized tariff silver and civil service as national questions and urged tariff reduction to aid New England industries.
A telegraph dispatch from St. Petersburg Sept 29 describes famine in Russia with peasants eating hunger bread made from dung bark and ground peas. Cattle die from the food while taxes and exports are blamed for worsening conditions.
In St. Joan Newfoundland on September 29, Mr Bryant of Philadelphia and Prof Kenna of Washington arrived from Grand Falls Labrador after a fruitful expedition. They report a 315 foot fall with a four hundred yard wide river upstream and roaring rapids. The party collected 200 plant specimens and recorded scientific data with photographs.
Washington reports the Chilean complication has eased toward diplomatic handling. A meeting of officials led to optimism for peaceful adjustment though readiness remains high. The purchases total about 2 000 000 pounds of flour and 25 000 000 bushels of grain as France seeks to stockpile amid high prices and tariff tensions.
