Blackmail Plot by Memphis Couple Shocks Society

Memphis on Sept 2 reports a bold attempt to blackmail Jas Yonge a wealthy cotton factor by newspaper carrier R H King and his wife. Yonge signed 5000 worth notes secured by a Memphis real estate mortgage under duress. King fled after the notes were repudiated by a real estate firm.

Raleigh Centennial Committee Plans and Float Proposals

The centennial board met at 5:30 with Col. J. M. Heck presiding. Josephus Daniels reported ten thousand copies of an address inviting North Carolinians to Raleigh’s centennial, and proposed printing twenty five thousand bulletins shared costs. Floats will depict Sir Walter Raleigh, Virginia Dare, 1812 troops, Lafayette in Raleigh, and rail progress, with a rule that each float be drawn by at least four horses and that Raleigh business houses be represented.

Louisburg Female College announces its next session starting September 1, 1802. The catalog lists courses in physical culture, washing lights and fires, stenography, typewriting, telegraphy, business, penmanship, and music, with a brick building and 12 percent acres. Tuition starts at one hundred and forty dollars for the 1803 term, with board in fifty rooms and observant campus features. Cheap brick at last in Wake County

Raleigh contractors urged to call Hammill and Honeycutt for brick produced on the Watson farm near Walnut Creek. They claim last year's price was 8 per 1000 bricks and report a new system yielding brick at 2 per 1000 less, improving supply and cost.
