Fire at Rural Hall destroys a large dwelling owned by Wm. Newsom and a purse with about 1700 dollars in cash and coins. Col. Wm. Bailey is found dead of heart trouble near his Walnut Cove home. A marble quarry discovery at Germanton signals forthcoming industrial work by an organized stock company.

Fire destroys tile and pottery plant near Goldsboro

Special to State Chronicle reports Maj. H. L. Grant’s tile and pottery plant near Goldsboro North Carolina was totally destroyed by fire Monday night. Loss is estimated at about 4000 dollars with no insurance. Origin unknown, fire started in the second story and all doors were locked.

Bloody election fights spill into Palermo rioting

In Palermo eleven Italians and Sicilians clashed as clerical groups attacked during the election violence. Police fired on rioters injuring many. In Virginia a man named John Broughton was mortally wounded in an alley shooting on Talbot Street. A powder explosion near Great Falls Montana killed eleven workers.

Tilden Will Case Decided in New York

The New York Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court’s judgment in favor of the heirs in the Tilden will case. The estate is now valued at about $5,000,000.

Fire at East Lenoir Street House Damages Roof

A noonday blaze started from a stove pipe on the roof of a one story frame dwelling at 218 East Lenoir Street. Sparks set old shingles alight as winds drove the fire. Firemen confined the flames to most of the roof, with Chief Engelhard estimating damage at 250 dollars. The house was occupied by E. G. Glenn and owned by James H. Young.

Gatling Gun Inventor Visits North Carolina Hero

Dr Richard Gatling inventor of the Gatling gun, a Hertford County native, visits Raleigh and Indianapolis ties. He recalls early life in North Carolina and work on rice and wheat planters. He praises Chief Justice Smith and other leaders and notes views on silver currency tariff and tax repeal. He will speak at the Exposition at noon today.
