Carlisle Changes and Storm Delays in Raleigh

The Brooklyn Handicap at Graves Exposition

The Brooklyn Handicap features fourteen entries including Lamplighter Banquet Raceland Judge Morrow Mrs Rusegel Diablo Nomad Leonawell Terrier Fidelio Charade Pickpocket Slume Lamplighter expected as the favorite. An estimated thirty thousand spectators were expected for the four o clock race with Lamplighter finishing second and Leonawell third in the prior year.

Life Saving Medal Awarded to Benjamin Hewlett

Secretary Marilsle awarded a silver life saving medal of honor to Benjamin Hewlett of Wilmington North Carolina for rescuing two girls from drowning at Wrightsville sound in August 1892. Hewlett displayed exceptional courage taking both guns at the same time from the channel where the water was 12 feet deep.
