Destructive Fire in Kentucky Leaves Heavy Loss

A massive blaze in Louisville on Third Street near Green destroyed and damaged 35 buildings, chiefly the Louisville Steam and Electric Power plant, with losses estimated between 300000 and 400000. Two firemen were injured, and several adjacent structures including the Christian Observer office were affected before the fire was brought under control.

Cyclone wrecks Oxford and nearby towns in May 3 storm

A North Carolina cyclone struck Oxford at 5 pm causing extensive damage to tobacco warehouses and prize houses, with at least one death and several injuries. Wires down and frantic searches followed as townsfolk assessed the wreckage including Leach s livery stable and Burwell s prize house. Reconstruction plans emerged in nearby Barriell and Kittrell as relief efforts began.

Wires Down In Raleigh As Storm Rages Titanically

Wires all down into Raleigh and telegraph lines deranged by high winds. The Raleigh Western Union switchboard caught fire as flames lit the room and managers cut wires to stop the blaze. News of the cyclone came via scattered reports until late last night when Oxford lines were resurrected. Debris carried by the storm was seen near Raleigh and Gaston shops underscoring its reach. Cleveland offers praise for the World's Fair, and a Civil Service critique argues for abolition of useless offices to end friction in government.

Glenn and the Collectorship in North Carolina

Awful Triple Tragedy in Fransfort Indiana

Theo Pendleton of Wolf Lake came home intoxicated and in a quarrel struck his wife killing her instantly. He then killed his six month old infant by beating its brains against the stove and cut his own throat.

Earthquake Shakes Sicily Causing Damage and Disruption

A strong quake struck Sicily today causing telegraphic outages across the island. Officials fear extensive property damage and possible loss of life as the event disrupts communications and operations.

Woman Hangs Herself in WV Jail After Family Slaying

In Wheel ing West Virginia a woman identified as Mrs Sarah Tibbs was found dead in her jail cell after being jailed for allegedly killing her son in law John Tibbs. The morning report also notes that William McCloud was murdered at his home and Tibbs claimed his mother did the killing. The New Berne Journal mentions railroad progress near Pollocksville with bridge piling complete across the river.
