Senate Passes Naval Appropriation with Changes

The Senate agreed to House amendments to the naval appropriation bill and sent it to the President after striking the harbor defense monitor and small cruisers from the Senate form. Debates followed on the army and legislative executive appropriation reports, with further actions toward gun factory site funding and World’s Fair provisions. The House also extended temporary government appropriations to July 30 and pressed labor and postal service inquiries amid lengthy debates. The Vesuvius ran aground near Randalls Island but freed itself at high tide.

Daring Train Robbery by Dalton Gang at Adair Station

The Missouri Kansas and Texas passenger train was halted at Adair in Indian Territory near Vinita and robbed of cash likely 50 000 to 75 000 dollars. Dalton brothers led the raid injuring Capt. Kinney Indian police L A Flora and two Adair doctors who were passengers. The robbers escaped after binding the messenger and are suspected to be the Dalton gang with no loss of life.

Telegraphed from Homestead Pa July 15 reports growing strain between military and steel workers amid the Carnegie strike. A clash with authorities occurred after midnight as Amos Stewart was briefly jailed for drunken conduct. Union leaders vow lawful resistance, with boycott as a key tactic and non union workers to be spared while Pinkertons face hostility.

Homestead Hotel Waiters Boycott Militia in Carnegie Row

At Carnegie hotel opposite the steel works the staff threatened to strike if General Snowden and other officers were entertained. The head cook joined the boycott, leaving but one waiter to inform guests they could not be served. Snowden, displeased, returned to headquarters and ordered breakfast. Also, Lunt and Wilson, linked to a cotton syndicate, were charged with embezzlement and forgery. Wilson confessed in writing.

Smoke from the mills at Homestead Amidst Union Battle

Non-union workers are inside the Carnegie plant gates in Homestead Pennsylvania though in small numbers. Strikers remain confident, fearing disruption as preparations continue to place green workers to start the mills.
