The State Chronicle reports from Washington on April 22 about Senate actions including a secretary’s communication backing coots and pensions for Indian police who quelled the Sioux uprising. The House added a cultural secretary to the list of prospective successors as pension bills and amendments pass. In the House, Kinney’s pension was amended from 18 to 12 dollars monthly, and discussions on trade with China and cotton manufacturers continued. The House also debated Mr. Rockwell’s seat with votes on bribery allegations, DefendingRockwell and criticizing Noyes, while the pension bill activity resumed later.
Wake Forest athletics report a successful Field Day with weather improving later. Winners include E. R. Tall in 100 yards, B. A. Justice in pole vault, J. A. Mason in one mile walk, and R. E. Major in running high jump. Several events were postponed to tomorrow due to rain.
At a Kentucky wedding Henry Davis uninvited at 19 struck Noah Mead with a knife. Mead knocked Davis down then Davis stabbed Mead in the heart. Mead died. Davis fled as officers search for him. The wedding paused briefly before resuming. Mead is the son of a county justice. the fight stems from an old feud.
The Goldsboro Argus reports Secretary Swinson of the Farmers Alliance attacks Butler and promotes a People’s party aligned with the St Louis platform. A county meeting is urged for May 13 to organize against Butler and discuss primaries, with tensions rising between Alliance, Third party, and Democratic factions across North Carolina.
