Senators speak on protection and free wool while debating the tariff bill and related measures. A mix of advocates defend the protective system against opponents who warn of monopolies and farm hardship as details on taxation and Indian affairs surface during the session.
Eight persons perished in the Golden Rule disaster and a New Orleans lady remains missing. Names include Nellie Maloney, Frank T. Riley, Wm Morrison, Matt Homer, and four unknown colored roustabouts. Separate fatal explosion at Brewuxcuam. Robbery aboard a Georgia Pacific train near Weems.
Tornadoes ravaged Chicago and Kansas areas on April 1 causing multiple deaths and injuries. A seven story brick building at Pearce street collapsed trapping residents including children. Kansas towns Topeka and Augusta suffered fatalities while further damage reported across Wellington Kiowa and Warrenton. Local efforts mobilized quickly with widespread alarm and rescue actions as wires failed and information trickled in.
On Thursday morning in Charlotte six prisoners broke from the county jail through a ventilator. John Boyd, the accused train wreck suspect, escaped with one other man at six o'clock after a rope of blankets lowered him. The sheriff was away. pursuit by the sheriff, Capt. Dodson, and others followed. No reports yet of Boyd. Also noted are local legislative and agricultural passages, Raleigh launching praise, and a Giants vs Phillies score in Richmond.
A letter to the Democracy of the State extols Frank I Osborne of Charlotte as a strong attorney general candidate. The writer lauds his schooling at Davidson College and his legal pedigree, pledging vigorous support if nominated. Also notes morphine victim William Sloan, Concord, jailed after seeking relief.
At Bessemer Alabama the Sterling dynamite plant exploded this afternoon destroying the facilities and killing four men in the packing house. The blast uprooted trees and shattered windows across the town. The cause is unknown and the plant is reported as entirely destroyed with tens of tons of dynamite stored inside.
