Raleigh Christening Marked Norfolk Port Celebration
North Carolina witnessed a grand Raleigh launch at Norfolk with Governor Holt and Commodore Weaver in attendance. The 10,000-ton cruiser slid into the water amid cheers as a champagne bottle broke on its bow and a sunset of flags, salutes, and processions celebrated the first U.S. Navy vessel fully built by the government.
