Paris reports President Thiers accepted the resignations of Interior Minister Gauland and Public Instruction Minister Dules Simon. The ministers retire from the cabinet amid a disputed election dispute and cabinet turmoil.
May 17 dispatch from Rems states the Pope is better yesterday but still very feeble. No visitors or conversations are allowed at the Vatican as his condition improves slowly.
Washington notes report the Master Mechanics Association members arriving in the capital after sessions in Baltimore. The group tours public bags and surrounding grounds, including the Custom House, while officials discuss the value of foreign coins and currency standards.

The event ignited city-wide agitation amid ongoing political tensions.
