May 14 Halifax reports a Drummond Colliery fire in Pictou county at 11 o clock. A second explosion as rescuers attempted descent killed several men. flames and smoke hinder efforts to reach survivors. Families in Easton and New Glasgow endure shock and uncertainty.
A Herald special from Havana dated May 12 reports Mr O Kelley moved by the Spanish Captain General from the prison at Manza baal to Santiago de Cuba. Other items note horse shoers winning a four dollar daily rate amid employer resistance, Brooklyn conditions, and various court actions including indictments and a jail-guarding incident.
In Dixon on May 14 the bodies of Frank Hamilton and Mies Petersberger were recovered yesterday afternoon. Lizzie Mackey was found in an eddy below Sterling dam this morning. Also recovered were the bodies of Mrs Rentmer and her child, bringing the total known victims to five.
