The Atlantic wreck salvage continued at Halifax on May 2 with the starboard side blown off. Fourteen bodies were recovered on Tuesday and twenty seven on Wednesday, mostly women, bringing total recoveries to 349 by Wednesday evening. The petitioners assert no such sum is due and that no assessment was made in 1872 or any time. the pretended valuation cited is 109 000 while petitioners’ taxable fee did not exceed 20 000 in 1872. The matter is set for a rule on Saturday.
In St Albans on May 2 the Vermont Central railroad inquiry produced a document alleging a large sum of money was divided among several persons for corrupt purposes connected to the Pavilion Bill. It states many members of the sixty nine Vermont Legislature were retained to influence the measure.
