Account of a swift execution shatters hope for reprieve while a bold crowd witnesses a dramatic finish. A separate Boston wrestling bout ends with Lane and Ainsworth in a hard fought victory as Lane claims the win after a lengthy struggle.
Special to the Star reports Foster was executed in the prison yard at 9 21 a m after a brief burial service by Rev Dr Tyng. He walked with arms pinioned and faced the final moment with apparent courage.
Washington report states the Secretary of War issued an order barring army officers from visiting or remaining at the Capitol during Congress to influence legislation on military affairs. The action aims to keep military matters from private lobbying and ensures only the President or Secretary of War can present them to Congress.
In Chicago on March 21 the assignee of Republic Fire Insurance files suits in the U S District Court to compel a sixty percent assessment from additional stockholders across the state. In Grande at Lampher's mill Frank Krupp, owner, is killed when caught by a running buzz saw as he bends to lift a plank. Nearby Merritt Smith, recently widowed and whose family suffered a kerosene explosion, is said to have become a maniac.
In NzEponsera March 21 Justice Rhodes presided over the case of Neil Ruggles a conductor on the Chicago and Burman railroad charged with assaulting M A Hewes after Hewes refused a fare payment. Ruggles admitted the assault and was fined ten dollars plus costs with an appeal noted amid a large crowd.
The tenth annual commencement of The Homeopathic Female Medical College for women was held at Association Hall. The college reports a highly satisfactory condition but seeks endowments for lasting benefits. Over ten years 76 graduates have been sent out with many attaining notable success. The current class numbers nine.
McElhaney, to be hanged today in Boston, remains calm and resigned as the gallows is erected. He spent a quiet night, signed his will, and received family and counsel visits while officials prepared for the brief ceremony. A wrestling match between Lane and Ainsworth in New Haven drew large crowds and heavy betting, Lane prevailing after three falls.
