Washington dispatches report ongoing Cabinet speculation after a rare session, with no immediate changes planned. Senator Sumner pursues a letter defending his removal of battle names, while Navy and Treasury affairs draw attention amid claims of misleading reports and potential Pennsylvania influence.
The report lists $200,000 on account of pensions and $512,000 for Confidential salaries with many sums for relief bills. It notes uncertainty whether the legal tender reserve will be encroached this month. Judge Richardson delays action awaiting the Treasury Secretary’s name.
In Chicago Curcaco March 15 the condemned man Driver was hanged at 2 10 PM in the County Jail. He spoke of liquor causing his crime, warned against saloons, and said he would reach a better place. His children and spiritual advisers visited him before the drop.
New York City March 16 Governor Dix refused clemency in Foster case. Foster to be executed at the Tombs courtyard on the morning of the 21st after a week left of reprieve. public excitement ran high with thousands learning the decision within hours.
John W. Osborne, condemned for the Yates City murder of Mrs. Mathews, confessed to following her and killing her with a brick and knife. He claimed he was hired to kill her, spoke to his minister after writing the statement, and died by hanging as the drop fell at 10:11 PM after refusing to speak.
In San Francisco March 15 the Modoc Peace Commission is effectively defunct and General Canby is delegated authority as negotiations end. A fresh conflict with the Modocs is anticipated. Matthew Tarpen, a large landowner, shot and killed Mrs. Sarah Nicholson of Chineros Rancho Monterey County over a land ownership dispute.
The Weather Bureau notes rising temperatures across the Gulf States with southerly winds and clear skies. Southeast winds and increasing cloudiness set in the Southern and Middle Atlantic States while New England sees a rising barometer and afternoon southwest winds. Lower Lakes will have southerly winds veering to brisk southwest with possible rain as the storm center moves northeast over Lake Huron. Cautionary signals slated for Lake stations from April 1.
In Columbus on March 14 a Senate petition from 58 Cincinnati citizens urged consolidating Cincinnati infirmary with Hamilton. A Cincinnati Board of Trade resolution sought repeal of all usury laws and a 6 percent legal rate. A joint resolution censured Congress for extra pay. amended to punish both parties was adopted. Several Ohio House measures passed or failed, including livery stock limits and bribe penalties, while Kentucky Senate discussed mineral surveys and liquor sale bills.
The Senate debated Caldwell's expulsion amid bribery accusations. Speakers argued over election legitimacy, state rights, and the remedy of expulsion, with references to a $15,000 bribe and corrupt lobbies. The chamber adjourned after an executive session with no further action.

The Board of Aldermen refused to endorse the Finance Committee and awarded English printing to the Enquirer. The German printing contract went to the Cincinnati Courier by 11 to 10 after contentious parliamentary maneuvering. Si Keek announced plans to seek a reconsideration of the German advertising decision.
The funeral for Dr Geo A Doherty aged 44 was from his Mo 204 Sycamore street home. Solemn Mass at St Xaver with Arch bishop Purcell, Catholic rites observed. Interment in St Joseph's Cemetery Warsaw pike. Rev W B Wright to preach tomorrow night at College Hall.
George Mullen fell twenty feet from Front street to the Little Miami railroad track near Litherbury street in Fulton yesterday afternoon. He was intoxicated, reeled over the edge, struck his forehead, and was found senseless with a bloodied wound. Taken to his boarding house, he died two to three hours after the accident. He was about thirty, single, employed at Leatherbury's shipyard.
Benjamin Myers of the 21st ward was arrested by Officer Johnson on a disorderly conduct charge after walking Evans street with a butcher knife and resisting arrest. Judge Straub postponed the case to the 22nd instant to allow Myers’s brother to press additional charges if desired. The sergeant notes Myers is not in his right mind and prone to savage fits.
Zebulon Irnon was arraigned in Police Court on a charge of threatening personal violence after an incident at Black Bear tavern. Prosecution witness Golder testified about unpaid bill, a failed attempt to shoot, and the arrest with $800 bond to keep the peace. The judge warned Irnon to leave town or face a year in jail if arrested again. Dayton KY notes Council meeting next Monday and local building plans.
The Republican County Executive Committee met at Maj. Blackburn's law office to decide whether to sustain or rescind calls for a Constitutional Convention. Resolutions established a Hamilton County convention in Cincinnati on March 27 1873 to nominate ten delegates, with seat allotments by precinct and vote thresholds. A county prison election was set for March 25 in the city and March 24 in the country, under the Baker law, with hall arrangements delegated to Col. Robert Harlan and others.
The Grand Lodge with delegations from across the state elected officers for the year and scheduled the next reunion in Cincinnati on the second Wednesday of March 1874. About 1,200 Knights marched in a Dayton parade amid broad praise for hospitality.
