Strong earthquake shocks hit northern Italy at 5 am shocking Venice and Verona. No major injuries there but Treviso dispatches say Filetto near San Giuliano saw a church destroyed with thirty eight killed. In Vitto ria area four villages report fourteen dead and many injured.
Massachusetts Plymouth June 30 fires devastate woods since June 20 threatening homes and villages. Citizens organize to protect property as thousands of cords of wood are destroyed.
Charles Rines a prominent saloon keeper died of apoplexy at Relais billiard hall corner Madison and Peoria streets at 5 o clock yesterday. A fire engine crew report steamer No 4 capsized attending a false alarm. driver injured. In Minnesota a candle length dispute led to a fatal shooting at Farmington. hotel proprietor Stoddard fatally wounded while Brown was killed by the pursuing chief of police who fired in room.
Washington reports the end of a plan to shift heavy packages to express services as cheaper than rail or other means. A western incident recounts a boy’s accidental self-inflicted gunshot, fatal. The Credit Mobilier suits see the Attorney General denying Government entanglement, with possible replacement of a defendant if a new President is elected. In New York City on June 30 the Supreme Court affirmed a verdict awarding Mrs. Avery D. Putnam $5,000 for her husband’s death on a Broadway and Seventh Avenue railroad car after alleging conductor and driver negligence. Valentine and Anthony Kessler were arrested Saturday on loitering charges and failed to appear for a morning court hearing. Bail was forfeited as officers report the pair fled toward Union Street and have been seen around the area with increasing regularity.
Major William Travis appeared in Police Court this morning as counsel for Eugene Ew ng a colored young man charged with carrying concealed weapons. The Major questioned concealment and the officer's lack of violence charges, then submitted the case. Hoonan dismissed the defendant but confiscated his chasepot.
A servant girl in Loveland was badly burned when a coal oil can ignited while she poured oil into wood on a kitchen stove. The can top and stove top tore off as flames spread to her clothes. Mr Robb and his wife rushed to smother the fire but she fled outside, later collapsing. The incident is being treated as likely fatal. In other notes, Mrs Tracey Cutler preached at the Methodist church on temperance and woman suffrage, drawing praise for her broad expertise. She has studied at Oberlin and trained in London and Paris hospitals.
Jesse R Grant father of President died at his Covington residence No 520 Greenup Street after a long illness of paralysis. The funeral will be held at Union M E Church at two o clock tomorrow. The President arrived in the city early this morning and is at his father’s home. The obituary notes his birth January 25 1794 and marriage to Hannah Simpson in 1821. Transfer exam results follow in the local school notes.
Tony Pastor's troupe begins its second week at Wood's Theater with an entire new programme and additions Baliy Beeson and Jenny Benson. Selden Irwin's company opens at Robinson's Opera House with John Brougham's play A Game of Love Our Irish Cousins. The company is said to be good and patrons are hoped for.
