Louis Joseph Buffet was elected president of the French Assembly at Paris on April 5 succeeding Grevy. Smith said he identified a woman seen at the house and that Goodrich sought an abortion denied by him. The abortion was allegedly produced by a man named Butts. Lucetta Armstrong was ruled not the woman. The proceedings adjourned at 12 30.
During a New Jersey legislative session a quarrel erupted after accusations against Mr. Cole and Col. Scovill. Cole called Scovill a liar and a fight followed, with Gen. Corse joining to defend Cole. Both sides were separated amid intense legislative excitement. After adjournment Senator Sheppard of Cumberland was arrested on bribery charges connected to a New York railroad matter.
Springfield April 5 reports from the Commission to investigate Penitentiary affairs are nearly complete. One will exonerate the Commissioners and Warden while not endorsing all business transactions. The other will exonerate Rowlett and Butz and Edwards with complicity and incompetency. A new Board of Commissioners is expected. Edwards may resign. Prosecution failed to prove some gravest charges. Jacksonville April 5 a notable accident in Pike county involved a threshing machine fire burning five horses and causing extensive property loss.
The State Patrons of Husbandry report nearly twelve hundred granges organized with growth in memberships and rentals. Members discuss upcoming campaign actions while outside politicians await their moves. A proposed Granher gubernatorial candidate named D. W. Adams causes attention.

Plaintiffs did not request repetition nor pay extra for it. The Atlantic Emigrants: wreck survivors from the steamer Atlantic to reach Boston by Pullman from Portland at six this morning. White Star agents arrange for their reception with Fanuel Hall and will care for them all day. They depart to New York by old Colony road and steamer Newport from Fall River Saturday night.
In Columbus on April 4 the House introduced a bill to repeal the rule admitting non veterans orphans to the Soldiers' Orphan Home. A joint resolution to appoint seven commissioners to represent Ohio at the Vienna Exposition without pay was adopted. A resolution rescinding extended inquiries by the Licensing Committee on the Short-line railroad was approved. Both chambers adjourned to Tuesday at 2 PM.
