Mack Street Paving Delays Frustrate Local Official
Councilman Paul Friedrich complains Mack street remains a mess amid a delay in soil cement paving on the four blocks. Rail unions win supplemental retirement via EJ&E pact
Fifteen unions won a supplementary retirement benefit plan with the Elgin Joliet and Eastern railroad. The program, funded entirely by the railroad, adds to Railroad Retirement Act pensions and uses a formula based on 1 percent of the employee’s average earnings in the last ten years multiplied by total years of service. Example: a 45-year veteran with $400 monthly average would receive $180 under the supplement, with the railroad paying $30 to reach that total. Pension floors were set at $154 for 30 years, $121 for 15 years, and $82.50 for those retired under disability rules.
Slayers Sentenced to 50 Years Each in Illinois Case
Louis G. Ortiz and Edward L. Olalde, both in their twenties, were sentenced to 50 years apiece in the Illinois state penitentiary by Circuit Judge James V. Bartley this week. They will be moved to the prison diagnostic depot on Collins Street within days. Deputies Lee Sched and Char Timm accompany them to court as spectators look on.
