VFW members at Jackson Street club volunteered for lie detector tests after a burglary. About $1200 was stolen from the safe when the inner door provided access. tests were requested by national officials, with no outcome reported yet.
Mrs. Clara Byford owner of a tavern at 2517 North Broadway said burglars forced a rear door last night and stole thirty dollars in silver and cash from under the bar. They took two cartons each of Camel cigarettes Lucky Strikes Chesterfields and Old Golds. A small amount of money in the till and a box of pennies were left untouched. A glass full of change at the back bar also remained.
Captain Paul Metzger of the Joliet police was injured when a man, Don King, allegedly asleep in a parked car near Moran Street and Broadway sprang out, striking Metzger. Plainclothesman L. Fallinske stopped the suspect, who was beaten and held at St. Joseph's hospital after seven stitches. The car, stolen from L. Kane of Meadow Avenue, belonged to Kane, who was unaware of the theft. King has a prior record and claims intoxication and amnesia.
Miss Ann Collins of 155 S Center Street is in critical condition at St Josephs Hospital after a heart problem. A Joliet organist at St Marys Catholic Church for 20 years, she is well known in the community.
Donald G. Elgar 20, president of Grundy county Four H club, was killed when struck by a car on Grand Ridge road near his Mazon farm. John Ester 52 of Chicago was injured after a truck he rode in stopped on the highway and was hit by another car driven by Mrs. Stephen Biath of Joliet. Ester was taken to St Joseph hospital and was reported improving. Esgar had been an active Four-H member for ten years and is survived by his parents siblings and grandparents. His body was moved to Davis Funeral home Morris. funeral set for 2 p.m. tomorrow. Police did not hold any driver.
