I M Canal proposed transfer to conserve recreation site
Houlihan argues Illinois spends hundreds of thousands to buy land for recreation while the I M Canal s locks dams and dikes rot and the public is kept from access. The plan would move control from the Division of Waterways to the Department of Conservation. The canal has not operated as a canal since 1933 and today is used mainly for recreation between Channahon and Morris where the DuPage River keeps water relatively clean and the Channahon towpath provides rough access.
