Thousands line loop streets as about 1 500 members of patriotic groups march past storefronts and churches in a Memorial Day tribute. Only three Civil War veterans join the parade, with R O T C captain R W McBride leading the procession and services held at Mount Olivet cemetery.
St. Joseph's Hospital announces a tag day for the first time in its history to raise funds covering deficits from charity care. Officials urge business firms to contribute, noting 2,546 charity patients served in the past two years and requesting checks payable to St. Joseph's Hospital.
Police under Capt Irvin Roe investigated a sudden ground collapse behind the William Tyler residence at 910 Cowles Avenue. An eight by six by five foot hole formed in the alley and a neighborhood boy crawled into a second opening about twenty feet north. Danger signs and red lanterns were set to keep people away while Sergt Thomas Kwarta studies the situation. Children offer various theories about cave dwellers.
School graduations set a long summer break with about 1000 students from multiple institutions earning diplomas. College of St. Francis and St. Francis Academy hold June ceremonies led by Father James Murray and Father Daniel McHugh. Joliet high school hosts eighty six eighth graders with Judge Bale delivering the address. Rural and parochial grads follow in mid June as hundreds prepare for diplomas.
Joliet school children clamored for a day of their own at the Century of Progress after reports from Chicago said more than half a million Chicago school children were admitted as parents faced coerced entry at the fairgrounds.
Joliet township high school awarded diplomas to 566 graduates plus 53 trade course certificates in a large auditorium ceremony. Dr. Louis L. Mann delivered the principal address and George P. Wardley and August Maye presided as diplomas and certificates were issued.
Waterway officials predict a rise in shipping on the waterway and hope the Lakes to Gulf project, completed at a high cost, will prove more than a government white elephant.
